early this morning i arrived home.upon entering i smelled burnt electronics.
my computer was black screened with a green light on the monitor and all the drives lights lit up.the keyboard number lock key was off(always left on) but scroll lock light was lit up.
the computer fans were much louder than normal and the power buttons wouldn't shut the computer down.
i flipped the power switch and it shut off.i then tried to reboot the pc and nothing all the drives light up keyboard scrol lock lights up but no post no bios splash screen.
i turned it off opened it up,but alas no physical damage(just a quick check as i had to leave shortly and just got back). no burnt wires nothing hot no charred components.
i dont have a spare northwood processor to try or different ram/motherboard either
would a power supply going bad cause this?it wasn't hot by touch and i cant find anything that smells burnt in the computer
my guess would be mobo or power supply(i am going to test each piece i can in my 1.5 willie to see what works and what doesn't.)
specs:
CPU: Intel Intel p=4 2800MHz @ 3150MHz
Motherboard: epox 4G4A+
Memory: 512 MB of corsair xms
Video Card: ati technologies 9700 pro (ati r300)
Hard Drive: ibm ultrastar 36Z15 18.4 GB @ 15000 RPMS
DVD Manufacturer & Model: cyberdrive dm166d 16x
CDR/CDRW Manufacturer & Model: liteon 40125s
Sound Card: sblive value
what all should i check when tearing it down, and do i run the risk of screwing up more components by trying another power supply?or parts in my other computer(it uses rdram and 423 pin processor so i can't test these obviously but maybe you guys no what to check for, more than i,so i am posting here
thanks as always
mike
update:the power supply is definately gone the other power supply powered it right up
but i have garbled video and the cursor is a big block.it is all bands of green and pink etc
i'll try the video card in the willie tomorrow and see but my money is on the mobo being bad as well
any thoughts?
