I had a virus on my desktop that I could not get rid of. So I bought a brand new 300GB Velociraptor and was going to reinstall XP on it. Anyway after installing the drive the computer no longer boots. I have a few last troubleshooting steps to take but I think I may have damaged the motherboard.

The old machine was a P4 3.2E / AGP x1950PRO 512.

I'm thinking of replacing it with an I7 920 / Asus P6T Deluxe V2 / 6gigs OCX 1333 Ram.

I was also thinking of picking up an XFX 4890.

I'll reuse the drives, case, and PSU (Enermax Liberty 500W 32A across both 12V lines - 22A max on a single 12V line)

Does anyone see a problem with that setup? Specifically should I worry about the PSU/VideoCard/CPU combo?

Anands 4890 article put a similar system at around 300 Watts load so I think I should be fine.

Hmm no replies.

Maybe this will help.

I'm leaning towards the 4890 due to the excellent performance per transitor as well as performance per mm^2 versus the competition. Plus DX 10.1 is a nice bonus.

Also

I currently an running a 19in LCD at 12x10

Any thoughts on alternatives or issues now? ;)

How would you have damaged the mobo installing a new drive? I'm personally waiting on gtx300. I have a gtx 280 right now skipping 285,295 waiting for dx11.

I actually don't know what's wrong but that's my best guess. The computer was working when I took it apart to install the new drive. I slide the mobo tray out a bit to give me room to put the drive in. (Coolermaster Praetorian case circa 2004). Hooked everything up and plugged it back in.

I get no video or audio. All the fans start up, led's light up including the mobo led, but no video. The mobo (Asus P4P800E deluxe) should "talk" while booting up. It should say "Now booting from operating system", or "No operating system found", or "Failed GPU" , etc if there is a problem. I get nothing.

I'm going to remove most of the components, reset the BIOS, pull the mobo battery, etc and see if it comes back.

I was hoping to make it until Windows 7 is released before building a new one but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now.

Well, the Core i7 would be a decent investment and would last a while. While the 4890 gives excellent performance for the buck, the real next gen cards are right around the corner. I'd pop in one of the cheaper mainstream cards in, such as a 4770, to hold you over for a while.

I've thought about getting a 4770. Unfortuntely no one has them in stock.

I'm also going to replace my 6 year old Planar LCD with a 19x12 sometime this year. So something like the 4890 or GTX275,w ith he extra grunt, would come in handy.

If you can't tell I tend to keep my gear for awhile.

Not sure really. I had to pull the mobo battery and use the reset bios jumper. At which point I got the mobo to boot to the point it started yelling error codes. (the mobo talks).

In this case it said the cpu failed its test. So I pulled my Zalman 9500 and reseated the CPU. I also blew out all the dust bunnies in the case.

Lo and behold the damn thing booted up on the old hard drive.

I've since managed to reinstall windows on the new 300GB WD Velociraptor.

Somehow moving the computer around screwed it up.

I guess I'll wait to upgrade until Windows 7 comes out now.
