Hello...

Some time ago, I RMA'ed a VisionTek Geforce4 ti4200SE. After waiting for almost two months they inform me that what they will send me will be upgraded to an ATI based card. I checked their website and found that they now make Radeon ATI cards now.

Can someone please be kind enough to explain the difference between these two, which is better and why?

A large request, I know... But I really would like to know, so if some one could either explain it to me or link me to the information, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
:D

This is exactly what VisionTek emailed me:

"As far as I can see within our system, the card you sent in will be upgraded to a ATI based card and should be shipping out soon"

So, I really don't know what they are gonna send me. As far as the SE, it is just like this, except it came in a different box and did not have the TV connector thingy.

I just wondered what the differenced between the two types of cards are. I am using this right now, and to be honest I dont know the difference between Geforces, Fx's and ATI's.

Well without them telling you what card they're sending there's really no way to know what the performance would be. My guess is you'll get a 9200 or a 9600, which will be slower than your current card. Still though, that's better than what most people who have tried to rma their visionteks lately have gotten. Btw, your card isn't a ti4200se, it's just the original version of the ti4200.

Ok, so the 9200 and 9600 ATI are slower than the Ti4200SE? Even if they are both 128mb? I was curious as to why he said Upgraded to an ATI based card. As I said, I have no idea what the differeces in Ti's, FX's or ATI are.

Ok, So I will email him back and tell him I want.....???... suggestions on what is comparable? Please? (I don't want to take advantage, but don't want to get 'took' with a lower preformance card, either.

the amount of memory on a video card doesnt mean if its good or not. you could make a video card with a gig of ram on it that sucks ass. its about the pipelines, core/mem speeds mainly. the 9200 is crap. the 9600non-pro, IMO, is worse than the 4200. the 9600 PRO, however, is better. im sure some ATI zealots will disagree about the nonpro 9600 being better, but thats just my opinion.

Update

Got an email from VisionTek saying that the card is a 9600 Pro 128mb Card.

I am curious as to the difference in technology between the GeFroce4 Ti4200 and the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. Is it just the same stuff, different names, or is there a real difference. I take it that the two cards are equal in preformance, but what is the performance based on?

I really appreciate all the time everyone has taken to answer my pesky questions!

If you're asking if ATI is better than Nvidia you're going to get a bunch of different responses. The simple answer both make good cards. IMO a 4200 is a great budget card but a 9600 Pro is a better card for the same money. I think they treated you fairly.

The MAIN difference is the DirectX 9 support on the newer ATI card. The Ti4200 was a directx 8.1 based card. And since you mentioned you're getting a 9600pro as a replacement, be happy :p , you're actually getting an upgrade.

Ha! I am happy! :)

The only problem with the card was that the fan was making noise. And when I first emailed their tech support, they gave me a song and dance about not being able to RMA it without the reciept. They offered to give me a credit towards the purchase of another card as a choice, or just buying a new one flat out!

I was using my b/f's business email account and replied telling them that it was their card, with their name on it. I should not need a receipt, as it had their name and logo all over it as proof as to who's card it was.... and that I was disgusted that they would not stand behind their products. And I thought it was insane that they would expect me to spend more money to buy a new card from a company who did not stand behind their products.

Finally I told that their choices were unacceptable to me and that I had counter choices for them:
1) they stand behind their product, and repair the card.
2) The RMA is and replace the card.
3) I throw the card away, buy from their competitor, and tell everyone with ears how we (our business) was treated by their company.

After about four days, I got an email with an apology. Of course they would stand behind their products. Of course they would RMA it. And, of course they were very sorry for any inconvenience. So, I shipped them the card, with a 'handling' check for $10.00. They lost the card, and I had to send them the DC #. They just put it in the system that they got it back and I heard nothing for almost two months. So, I emailed asking where the he!! my repaired card was and they replied that I was getting a replacement of the 9600 Pro.

If it is a better card, I am Thrilled

:) :) :)

That's sweet. A 9600Pro is a bit of an upgrade from a Ti 4200. I have both now. The 9600pro has DX9 features which do provide some nicer looking shading, this will be more evident as DX9 game releases occur throughout the next year. I think you should consider yourself lucky, and good for the company for treating it's customers properly. I had to RMA my Ti4200 last month and I was praying they were able to fix it (it's a great card too) or give me 9600Pro. You ended up well. Enjoy :)

Wow, you got lucky! I'm really surprised after all the other people here have had so many problems.

As others have stated, the main upgrade is the dx9 support. You also get MUCH better aa/af support with the 9600 pro.
