Hey all,
I have my fileserver down the hall and in the closet (to cut down on noise, really!)...I access it via filesharing (\\IP or \\name) and occasionally through remote desktop - all my PCs are winXPpro sp1.

in any event, I recently ran windows update on it (over remote desktop), and there were around 18 or so critical updates, so I installed them. I did not (98% sure) install sp2.

anyway, after it shut down and restarted, I couldn't access it over RD or normal filesharing (neither \\name or \\ip works) and my laptop (which previously only worked with \\ip) can't get to it either.

I've unplugged and replugged the router and switch, updated router firmware (needed doing anyway) tried simple filesharing, tried netbios...all to no avail.

any tips....preferably that don't involve me digging that behemoth out of the closet and plugging it into my kvm?

thanks

can you ping it?
Is it dead?
did it lock up?
does it get any air in the closet or did it overheat and die?

Try some basic troubleshooting first

Just got back from a drive to a nearby office to fix whatever i did to kill remote desktop. Don't feel too bad:p
Did you have it on an assigned IP address, or is it a DHCP client? Do as the poster above me suggested and try pinging it. If that does not work, dig it out, or physically reboot it.
