when the computer starts to boot up.. it gets the the windows 2k start up screen and i hear a click and the hd winds back down.. like it just shut off.. the same sound i would hear when it was the main hd a while back after shutting down.. what could be the problem?.. ifi put it as the main hd .. it works perfect.

Edit: finnally got it to show up in win2k.. but now when the computer boots.. says that the cd rom isnt atapi compatable. only says this when 2nd hd is in. any help?

the cd rom is detected in bios

Yes, make sure that it is your primary secondary and make sure that the jumpers are set correctly. Also, go into your BIOS and make sure that your BIOS is seeing it.

Sounds like one of a fewof problems:

1. The HDD is dying a slow death. Possibly a problem with the motor.
-or-
2. The HDD power connector is loose. Check where the wires connect with the plug that connects to the HDD. Sometimes those wires can become loose. Try another power plug.
-or-
3. Your BIOS is configured to power down the HDD after a certain amount of time. Check your BIOS power settings.

Also, you have to go into the disk manager to add a hard drive in win2k. That is where you can partition, format and assign a drive letter to the HDD. It is in admin tools sumewhere.

i have changed the jumpers many times and none work.. the bios finds it too.. but the CLICK noise when it boots up.. it like shuts off.. u dunno whast up wiht that.. thats my prob. so i cant see it.. cuz its "off"

My IBM harddrive made the same click sound and then it spinned down, right after it spinned up again I tried other power connector, no luck. Then one day a saw that the IDE cable almost had fallen of from it's connector on the motherboard I pushed it back in place and it have newer clicked again.
I don't know how I made that sound like a story
😕

Someone had this problem the other day it was somthing turned off in the device manager, ATA100 turned to none instead of autodetect or somthing liek that.

<< so your saying that maybe my ide cable is loose? >>

Mayby not loose but bad attached? Mayby? Mine whas and made clicking sounds but my worked also.

Well, from my personal experiences, it kind of sounds like you have a Western Digital hard drive, or some other type that has to be jumpered "Master - Slave present". I had a Western Digital drive that did the same thing once, and after changing the jumpers the hard drive stopped doing the "click and spin down" thing. As for the CDROM problem, this could also be from the incorrect jumper settings on the hard drive, or it could just be the cable is a little bit loose on either the board or the drive. Believe me, I have had this happen when it totally looked like it was in good. Hope this helps.
