For heavier items such as monitors, maybe you can buy them locally? What kind of PSU does your case have (if any)?

Check locally for prices of quality PSU's such as Antec and Enermax. If the prices are reasonable (if about equal to online price + shipping), buy local. 350w should be plenty but if you plan to OC, there is always the safety margin that 400w offers ( for added stability and peace of mind). But if the price difference is something you can live with, go with the higher wattage.

You cannot waste money on a PSU. A Bad cheap PSU will signifigantly reduce the stability of the system. Spend less on somthing else, but a good PSU is definitly worth the omeny.

I would check these out. For a basic (1HD, DVD, CDRW, etc.) setup I think the 330 True power would be plenty for $59 shipped. It has the "Antec Low Noise Technology" which varies the fan speeds of both the PS and cases fans that are connected. I built a system with this PS a couple of weeks ago and it works quite well. If you feel you need more power go for the True 380.

You do know a 17" LCD has about the same viewing area in compare to 19" CRT, right?

What I don't understand is that you going to spend $136 mobo, where you can get the D/E model for about half the price. (and G chip give no noticeable performance)
And you spend $156 for a PC2700 where most likely your 1.8a is not going to run more than 150FSB anyway. (PC2100 can handle that easily, my Crucial PC2100 is running 166Mhz w/out increasing voltage.)

Why don't you be nice to your eyes? Get a good 17" LCD not only reduce your visual strain but also will last you a long long time, instead spend on something that may no longer satisfied your need in 6 months?

This is my last min suggestion.

I'm logged on Newegg and Googlegear as we speak and so far, here is what I have in my cart:

Newegg: Epox 4G4A+ $136

GoogleGear: P4 1.8A retail ($157)+ 512mb Corsair 2700 ($156) (FOR $20 MORE, I CAN GET 3200. AM I GOING TO NOTICE?)

The NEC 991SB monitor is out of stock at Newegg ($326) and I can find it at EMS computing for $285 but it seems EMS are very unreliable.

I'm trying to pick a decent (and silent) PSU but they are damn expensive! My first pick was a 400W but I am considering 350W now...suggestions? quotes? stores? PLEASE?

i'm not getting a hard drive, nor videocard, nor cd/cdr/dvd

My current budget is exactly $900

so far we have:

$900 -136 -156 - 157 = $451

So I still need a PSU and a monitor right now. And I don't want to waste too much on the PSU either, there is a long list of components I will have to buy later on.

Any questions, commentaries, flames. I'll be in front of my computer for the hours to come.

get your monitor locally at a mom and pop shop.
used 21 inch hp monitors can be had (seattle) for 210.00
and that would leave you money left over for ?
17 an 19 inch are even lower and can save you even more plus you can see the monitor hooked up and judge the visual quality yourself.

your call hope this helps

Get the PC3200 for more headroom if you overclock and utilize the 3:4 or 4:5 memory ratio.

I really like my 4G4A+ and I am sure that memory (512 samsung) will be more than fine.
