**UPDATE** Worst day EVER!!!! Damn, I missed work today...

Today was my first day of LPS duty at DPS (locking and unlocking of campus buildings). I have worked vehicle patrols before but I signed up to do LPS during the summer (we work from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.). I set my alarm for 4:45 a.m, and I remember turning it off but I don't remember getting up, and the next thing I knew I woke up at 6:40 a.m. and jumped out of bed yelling at myself for over sleeping.

It's not like it's my first day of work at a new job, but it is the first day of work in a 'promotion.' I emailed my coordinator and apologized and I'm going to go there after class today and let her know that it was a one-time thing, and that I'll be more careful about getting to work in the future.

Dammit, and I get paid $10/hr. for this too. Argh, I hope I don't get written up.

EDIT: okay, this is officially going too far. I went to the 'first day' of my Psych class (It's M-T-Th) and sat in the lecture hall for 20 minutes before I decided to go down to the Psych office becuase no one was there...and on the markerboard there, in HUGE letters, it said, "SPRING CLASSES START APRIL 29!" Ugh, I was one day EARLY, but I went because I saw "Monday" on the schedule. Somebody shoot me NOW.

EDIT 2: I'm not usually this dumb. Really. I'm very responsible. I think I should just crawl back into bed now, and tomorrow I'll wake up at 4:45 and it will be Monday all over again and I can do it right. UGH!!

Yeah, you're right. I know the coordinator and she knows me, and she's a really nice person. Especially since we have to be at work at 5:30 a.m., this type of thing happens fairly often, but I still feel horrible considering it's my first day of the new job, and I'm usually really careful and punctual.

I'll see how it goes when I go to the office after class. Hopefully she'll let me train with her tonight to make up for today's shift - she's the only one working.

I used to work a shift similar to that when I unloaded Trucks for UPS. In Order to wake up on time you are going to have to force yourself to hit the sack by 9:00PM at the latest.

OH BTW, I hope you keep your job.

I think you get a certain amount of no call/no shows at work before you're formally reprimanded (I guess they figure college kids have a hard time waking up early no matter what) and since I was just supposed to be training today, it's not like there will be buildings that don't get unlocked, just that I didn't show up.

I think it's time to buy a new alarm clock.

Don't worry it happens to us all. I'm a teacher and I made the infamous mistake of setting the alarm to wake me up at 6:00 p.m. instead of a.m. This usually is not a problem for me as I always wake up before the alarm goes off but that evening I stayed up very late studying for a class I was attending. This has happened to practically everyone and as long as it does not become a habit I see no reason you will be in any real trouble.

I've never had a problem waking up. But you may consider two alarm clocks one set for five minutes after the first and across the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off.

I used to work a 2:30 am shift at a Bakery, I had to mix the dough before the kneaders arrived. I missed it once, arrived at 5:30 with the kneaders, and that f-ing sucked. Basically the whole damn bakery had to wait for my ass to do my job before they could do thiers. It's such a well timed process that the whole place was thrown off for 3 hours. Most of the customers were regulars and knew when the bread came out of the oven, so they were pissed too.

So I made the entire staff of 20 work 3 hours after their shift AND pissed off a bunch of customers. Let me tell you it was not fun, it never happened again, that's for sure.

I've never really had a problem waking up - I used to wake up every day last summer at 6:30 to work at a golf course. I guess I've never really tried to wake up at 4:45 though...apparently it's pretty tough.

i like to set my clocks ahead some random amount, so it freaks me up when i look at them in the morning. unfortunately, i can calculate what time it really is way too quickly.

ouch... hopefully they will understand but don't do it again!

Get 5 alarm clocks with your first paycheck and set them all!

Emailed? You should have called at 6:41a.m. and explained the situation. She was probably wondering WTF this guy is doing on his computer when he should be busting his ass to get to work, even if it is an hour and half late.

Set your alarm to HIGH and 10 minutes before you have to get up. Then place the alarm across the room. You would have to physically get up and turn the damn thing off. I know that I have turned the thing off and gone back to sleeping if the alarm was right next to me.

That'd just be way too confusing.

I Can sleep through alarms like Jonny Appleseed. It doesn't matter if I have em across the room or next to my head, if I am tired enough I'll keep sleeping.

no one ever believe me nad they thought I was just lazy. But nope.....I had a court date in a county where I had a family member and I drove up there late at night to be in court the next day...and brought my alarm and told myu uncle to wake me up. I didn't sleep well that night (just a traffic ticket.....) and when my uncle woke up and came to where I was sleeping, I had my cd-alarm clock @ ful volume sitting next to my head:

Bascially with me, I have to go to bed 5-7 hours before I want to get up, and my body will wake me up. If it's less hten 5 hours, it takes a miracle to get me awakened.

Good luck getting up on time. Tht comes awful early.

I used to set my clock to midnight when I went to bed, calculate how many hours until I needed to get up, and set my alarm for that number.

My coordinator wasn't working this morning - she's working tonight. I called dispatch (my job is at the police department) to see if anyone was in the student office but no one was there at 6:40. I'm gonna go to the office after class - I know my coordinator will be working tonight, so I'll see if I can talk to her then. I'll make sure to let her know I called dispatch though.

EDIT: even if I had gone in 1.5 hrs. late, I'd just be sitting in the office until the other Wolverine Units (that's what we're called) came back. The job is done all around campus on the road in department vehicles, so there's no chance to start late - it's all or nothing. :(

Way too much math, way too early in the morning.

I cheated and used my fingers. Seriously, if you decide you have to get up at 8:15 and you're going to bed at 3, it's not hard to round your sleep out at 5 hours. Set alarm for 5:00 (or 5:15 if you're lazy), and the clock to midnight, and you're all set.

Of course, if you're not used to the setup, when you get up in the morning, you're like "5 am? No way!" and roll over.

So and you mean you weren't fired? I feel sorry for you, but if you were my employee... You'd not be mine anymore.

No, I haven't been fired. I've been working at this job for about nine months (as a Victor Unit - doing jump starts and vehicle unlocks), and I've NEVER been late for my job the whole time I've worked here. I might get written up, which isn't the end of the world but it goes into your employee file and I'd rather not have that happen.

If it was the first day of my new job, I could understand if they wouldn't want me to work there anymore. But it's basically the first day of my new hours, and the hours ARE pretty early, so hopefully, HOPEFULLY they'll cut me some slack.

Hey no offense meant man!!! I just wanted to cheer you up so that you stay alert. Everyone in this thread says its OK and they done that, but employers hate that, that's obvious.

I have an atomic alarm clock, so it's always set to the right time. It's also set to display military time so I have no chance of mistaking AM for PM when I set it. If I think I'll have trouble waking up in the morning, I put the clock out of my reach. No reason to set alarm clocks to random times, just use some common sense.
