Update: User rant: Network perfection not perfect enough

I'm sitting here tonight in my evening networking lab with my home server for a foot rest. When I got home from work today, my roomates announced that they were demanding that I surrended the cable modem and one of my routers so that they could "see if they could do better." Apparantly they've realized that cheaping out on their wifi nics was a dumb idea.

Apparatntly the 5.5 gigs theyve downloaded from BT in the last 72 hours ALONE havent come down fast enough for them

This service has been previously delivered to them via a failover load balancer between comcast cable and our university lan (also combines speed on good days) and has a wifi bridge tying in their xboxes and ps2's. I paid for that out of my own pocket just to make sure we wouldnt be stringing wire everywhere. Both WAN's have frequent outtages, but with the balancer and its hand programmed connection profiles.... we've been able to make out really well.

So now they're trying to configure a network with our dlink router (configured strictly to be a wirless access point only) with no DHCP, won't pull a DHCP on its wan jack, password protected... whole 9 yards.

I get some satisfaction from not seeing any of them on AIM right now.

I'm going to be without lan for the next several days while I conveiniently avoid helping them be complete dumbasses. Between that and a crackdown at work on recreational surfing, I'll probably be off for a while.

Fvck n00bs who think they know more about networking than paid professionals.

Update (8 hours later):
They finally got it working. Must have flashed the hell out of my poor router... Can't decide how I want to end their little experiment... should I just whore up a permanent cue of bandwith flood... or I could just ban their IP's....

I'm not dealing with RJ45 running down the halls of my apartment, or our apartment's innane web traffic not being peeled off and pushed onto the university lan where it's a protected service. Freaking noobs cant even wrap their mind around bandwith management :|

Update (next morning):
I changed the mac adress of the router with my PDA at least a dozen times last night causing outtage after outtage while my roomates thought I was asleep. This morning they're acting like nothing ever happened. what gives?

You're the noob for letting them do it.

how do you put your foot down when one of their names is on the cable bill? They've been blaming spyware problems on me for months! One of them was even bragging last night that he did a system restore, so none of the conection problems he's getting could possibly be his fault
