UPDATE: A day late, but the Supreme Court declined the democrats emergency appeal. This means the new redistricting map will be used in this years election. They will decide if they will take the full appeal at a later date. At this point, I seriously doubt the Supreme Court takes up the case, or if they do, it will be to clarify issues, and not overturn.

Supreme Court declines emergency appeal
-------------------------------------------------------
They question the wisdom but ruled that it didnt violate the voting rights act. 5 of the 9 US Supreme Court judges would have to agree to hear the case, if they agree to hear the case the 2002 redisricting map will be used for this years election.

The federal judges said Democrats stretched minority voter protections offered by the federal Voting Rights Act to attack the Republican plan.

Judges uphold new congressional map, but question the wisdom.

One of the tv pundits said this move will let the republicans hold congress for at least the next 10 years.

Maybe it is time for the democrats to start talking about how they will work with republicans if they get elected president.

Nothing like Gerrymandering

And it was not before? You do realize that there are currently no(as in zero) statewide elected democrats, yet texas was sending more democrats to congress than republicans?

Talk about gerrymandering.

You seem to assume that I approve of the practice by anyone. There ought to be some mechanism to prevent the carving up of turf by politicians for partisan purposes.

I dont disagree.

I propose:
1. More representatives
2. A representative can only take a full a county at a time. Unless the population density requires more resentatives, at which point those representives must share the population within that county.

This may be a misrepresentation of the Court's intent. They are hearing the Pennsylvania gerrymander case, so there's not much point in dealing with both.
