My new PC (WIN XP) will not allow me to access the network, cannont access the intenet and is pissing me off. All of this started after I set it up for home networking and then proceeded to set up my old PC. As soon as I setup my old pc (WIN ME) it froze halfway through and I had to reboot and now it's the only one accessing the internet. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED as you can see I've been F'ing with this for days. :(

To help you out people here will need to know, at a minimum, the following:

The OS on both the transferring machines.

do you have each of the drives shared and mapped? if so it is relatively simple, you just copy and paste ;) To share in xp simply right click on start and click explore then right click on the drive you wish to share and click on sharing then the sharing tab that pops up, then say share this drive over the network.

Drives shared and mapped???? What is all that? I was told to hook up the network via my linksys router and that this would be the easiest way to transfer data from my old pc to my new pc. Is this correct or not? Should I get out 5 million cdr's and start burning data?

lol, no I don't think burning them to cd-r's is a very viable solution ;) yes, they were correct when they told you it would work to hook up your computers to the router, have you tried the directions I gave you in my last post? or did they not make sense (a frequent occurance :p ) also can we get a few details about how your network is configured? are you able to ping the router from each machine, are they pulling ip addresses automatcially? if you aren't sure what I am talking about, read through some of the networking FAQ's, and get a little base knowlege, that way you can help the people here help you :) also if we can't help you, after reading the FAQ's the people over in networking have some very specific knowlege on how to setup and configure networks.

Thanks DaiShan. The IP addy is pulled up automatically. I've only done that on the initial XP machine though. I figured if the other machine (WIN ME) could connect to the internet once the router was hooked up that it was doing the same. Not really sure of my next move though.

those are both good signs! now could you try this for me, right click on start and click explore then right click on the drive you wish to share and click on sharing then the sharing tab that pops up, then say share this drive over the network. this is on the xp machine, I don't have a machine running me so I am not sure how to do this, possibly just open up control panel and right click on the drive you want to share and do the same steps as before.

DaiShan you're absolutely correct about the XP sharing, but i want to transfer files from the ME (old) system to the new one. The options you listed do not work when right clicking on start in me and then on the drive, but they do work in XP.

Thanks again DaiShan. I tried the link and followed the directions, but right clicking does not produce the sharing option in the pulldown menu, nor am I able to find out where to restore it through properties as stated in the directions. What am I doing wrong? Dude 8604 I have XP Home.

under network options in the control panel click on your network adapter and then click on the file and printer sharing button, is file sharing enabled?

Sorry guys, had a bit of trouble with my internet connection. I still don't have this all figured out yet, but I'm getting there. Tomorrow's a long day and I've got a lot of patience, but I'm tired and will see things more clearly in the morning. Thanks for the help. Night.

I'm back and still playing around with this thing. The biggest point of confusion for me is that I want to grab files from my old pc and transfer them to the new pc. Should I establish a sharing disk on both pc's (i.e drive c). If I'm only transferring files from the old pc to the new pc and not back is this necessary?

If your network is set-up correctly, you should be able to go to your Network Neighborhood/My Network Places. Open the computer you're trying to network to. All the files will be there. Then just cut/paste what you want.

DaiShan, what do you mean we aren't quite there yet? I am able to access the internet through the Router on both pc's, but my question is: Should I establish a sharing disk on both pc's (i.e drive c). If I'm only transferring files from the old pc to the new pc and not back is this necessary? I'm still a bit confused, but I'm trying to understand you guys so I can move forward. At the very least I'm learning a few things.

If you aren't interested in having a permanent network, you can use hyperterminal to make a temporary connection between the computers. If you want to do that, then I'll tell you how. Let me know.

About your internet problem now, make sure that the network settings are all set to automatically detect network settings.

Dude, I'm interested in whatever will get me on my way. Hyperterminal sounds great! Eventually, I will want to network with my laptop, but I don't have a card for that yet. So, please provide me with any details that will help.

the easiest way to actually accomplish what you are doing is to have both PC's sign into Windows with the same exact userid and password. From there you can map drives to the administrative shares, without having to worry about turning on any sharing. I know it sounds complicated, but it is pretty simple. For example, the share for the C drive becomes C$, D becomes D$, etc....

Thus, to map to the D drive on a computer named FOOBAR, right click on My Computer and select Map a Network Drive then type the following:

\\computername\D$

where computername is obviously the name of the computer you are trying to map a drive to.

This should do it with the minimal amount of work, IF you are signing on to both computers with the same userid and password.

mr-evil can I do this even if they are running on two different OS? Also, when I shut down my new pc (WIN XP), the network wouldn't allow me access. Why is that happening when I configured this pc (WIN XP) first and took the wizard from a disk to the old pc (WIN ME)? The old pc (WIN ME)is still connecting to the internet, which is how I'm communicating this message, but the new pc (WIN XP) will not connect at all anymore. I am thoroughly confused at this point and wondering if I should disconnect everything and start from scratch....
