Update: Stupid Ford

I can't believe after 4 1/2 years of faithful service my little Escort GT died on the way to work. You think companies could make a battery that would last more than a year after it's projected life span, 60-month battery only lasted 75 months. :|

Anyways the nice people at the local Wal-mart sold me a replacement battery for $40 and I was on my way to work again.

Cheers ,

Update:
Well all of you that thought I was wrong to joking blame Ford for my non-Ford battery failing after exceeding it's warranty limits can now laugh at me. My great little Ford Escort GT is down with a failed clutch slave cylinder after 220K miles of faithful service. 🙁

<--Owned by his own car after complaining about it. :|

I believe 15 monthes is longer than 1 year, even a bakers dozen year. 🙂

I suspect a math error. 😉

However, I'd keep an eye on it. If it's a stick and it died because you 'killed' it when driving, OK.

BUT......................if it just died sitting there, then you may need an alternator. If your new battery isn't being charged while you drive, you're gonna be bummed when it won't start for ya' this afternoon, or tomorrow morning!!

I don't get it, you're mad at ford b/c a battery that they said would last 60 months didn't last longer than 60 months? 😕

Woah, right over your head!!

Wait...

Not only are you a Ford mechanic...you just blamed Ford because your battery died before it's projected life was up?

You know...

Everytime someone bitches about their automotive battery dying, I'm going to roast them for not taking care of it.

Seriously. That's the only reason. You all would lambast someone if they blamed Honda for their car breaking down, and then we came to learn that they never changed the oil.

Flooded lead acid batteries require MAINTENANCE. What a concept. 😛

Ah Eli it was a 60-month battery that lasted 75 months. 😉

And yes I was a Ford mechanic with over 20 years experience. Now I repair classic muscle cars and a few exotics cars in my own little shop. Plus I'm a technical advisor to Ford Dealerships.

😱

Oops. LOL.

Well.. umm.. Still! 😛

Batteries are capable of lasting 10-15 years. Most people never pay any attention to them, though.

Although, there are a lot of variables. Some cars and/or driving habbits run hotter under the hood, which will reduce battery life.

OP lives in Michigan? Would the harsh winters shorten battery life?
Yes.

I'm not entirely sure if cold temperatures reduce battery life in and of themselves. I know hot temps do. I guess it would be logical that they do.

The mechanism would be harder cranking in the winter and therefor a higher Depth of Discharge each start. Cold temperatures would also reduce available cranking amps, again forcing the battery to discharge more to start the car.

One way to rate batteries is by how many charge and discharge cycles it can take.

Normal automotive batteries do not like deep discharges, and will be toast after perhaps 50 deep cycles.

However, they excel at shallow discharges. A typical automotive battery may be able to give 15 - 20,000 shallow discharges(starts).

I'd imagine that the harder cranking in the winter would cause a slightly higher DoD and slightly reduce battery life.

This could be minimized with proper maintenance though.

How many of you have actually ever performed battery maintenance?

I remember one day when I had my Mustang GT I got a flat tire on the right rear wheel. I pulled over to change it at some truck rental place parking lot and this idiot who worked there made the comment "should have bought a Chevy" as he stood there and watched me change the tire. What a dumbass.

I realize you are just being facetious but I thought I'd add that story to your post.

I had some eggs that had a use by date of 06/22 and I cracked one open yesterday and it was rotten.

DAMN CHICKEN EGG POS! :| CAN'T YOU LAY AN EGG THAT LASTS FOREVER?!?!!!
