I don't know about Canada but in the U.S. it is highly dependent on how big of dicks the local law enforcement is, or how short the local budgets are. For example, in VA, I have gotten a ticket for going 1 mph over the speed limit (26 in 25), because it was a rural area and the cops know out-of-towners are too lazy to contest in court.

Wow, where in VA? That is crap.

I just called to get an auto insurance quote (new company), apparently their records say I got a 21-25 ticket two years ago. Now I have to figure out how to refute that, because while I did get a ticket it certainly wasn't 21-25 over.

*UPDATE*

Did some calling around for new insurance quotes today. After getting a laughable quote of ~$8000 a year from one company they were actually kind enough to refer me to another company. This company just so happens to work in the same building as me as well :). They gave me a quote of ~$2600 per year. More that I was paying, but significantly better than what my current provider is offering for my renewal.

I can also confirm what other posters were suspecting. Rather than receiving a massive increase, I was actually losing a "benefit of the doubt" type discount. I really feel like I've dodged a bullet here. I think the extra $20 per month I will be paying is justified given my place in the "risk group," and much better than the $80 more my current provider is currently offering.

what do you drive a Maybach?

$2600/yr for car insurance is insane.

We pay < $1000 per year for TWO cars driven full time. That includes collision, and these aren't beaters.

Nissan Maxima. I believe the reason that my insurance is so high is because:

1) I am young ( see < 25)
2) I am considered newly licensed (Licensed in 2007)

Just FYI-

If I remember correctly you mentioned earlier in the thread that you are in your early-20's. If that's correct, understand that you will NOT get a large premium decrease when you turn 25. That's a common misconception. Most insurance companies do NOT give a large decrease for turning 25, they give a small one. What they DO give a large decrease for is 9 years of driving experience. It just so happens that most people licensed at 16 gets their 9 years at 25, so they see a large decrease and make a wrong assumption.

It varies widely from state to state. Michigan, unfortunately, is one of the most expensive states. I was just quoted $1029.32 for 6 months, woohoo.

yup. This is all correct.

And post he responded to just explained alot. You were licensed in 2007. You are still a new driver. You will be a new driver until you reach the threshold for number of years experience. That number is usually over 7 years at most companies.

If you get anything on your driving record while in your "new driver" period, you are going to pay up the ass no matter where you get insured. New driver plus citation....statistically, you are high risk.

Thanks for this info. The *magical 25* was always my assumption.

Yep speeding tickets are expensive here. It's a major cash grab for the government...

But where.. as in which province.. I live in Ontario and they are FAR FAR less expensive.. I want to avoid where you live at all costs... and if it is Quebec I'll be damn sure not to speed on the weekend...

You complainers have never driven the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago....Speed Limit will state 45-55 with drivers going 80(slow lane) and 100+(fast lane)

Most bus systems in cities I've lived in cost that much every second month.... You must have a bike.

I live in a top-10 US city (albeit one of the cheapest) and the regular price for an unlimited bus pass is $30/month. I get a discount either from my employer (most large employers in this city have an agreement with them) OR because I'm a student. This lowers the price down to exactly $100/year for me.

I do have a bike, although the bus goes pretty much everywhere so I don't need to use it much out of necessity.

Public transportation for the win!

I like riding in my own car. I like going wherever I want, whenever I want. I like not having to huff it to a bus stop that may or may not be covered in graffiti and gum and smell like bum piss, then stand for ages waiting for a bus that may or may not show up. I like not being on a bus full of people who couldn't possibly care about anyone but themselves and smell awful. I like not choaking on bus fumes. I like stopping my transportation right where I want to and not risk the bus driver not paying attention, blowing by my stop, then having to huff it several blocks backward and being late.

Sorry, I rode public transportation including lightrail from 4th grade up through 11th grade.

Fuck public transport.
