I was on campus during lunchtime about three weeks ago when a middle age lady stopped me and introduced herself as talent agent scouting for college students for a photoshoot for one of her clients, some shoe company. She gave me her card and asked if i'd be interested. I said I was and she some shots of me to take back to her client.
I thought nothing of it and went on my way...
This Wednesday I get a phone call from her saying that the company wanted me to do the shoot and it'd pay 450 dollars for a couple hours work. The shoot is this Saturday and Sunday, and since I have nothing better to do except maybe study, I agreed to do it. I'm still wary it might be a scam but I checked out the lady's information and it checked out.
The shoe company she represents is a known company too...
heh, maybe I'll sell my businesses, drop out of Cal, and go into modeling.

Just came back from day 1 of shooting. Apparently this photo shoot is a big deal, me and 7 other college aged guys working w/ Mischa Barton and some girls from a modeling agency... I'll update w/ pics later

The photo shoot... it wasn't a scam.
Saturday morning I headed to campus for the weekend long photo shoot I mentioned earlier. The people who organized the shoot told me to be there at 8:30. What they didn't tell me however was that the shoot was a big deal.
I went to the designated place on campus (base camp as the PA's called it) and was met by Vans, Trucks, Police Cars, and a flurry of activity. I introduced myself to someone who seemed to know what the hell was going on and was escorted to wardrobe, handed some hippy looking sweater and told to try it on with the shoes we were advertising. While in wardrobe I met the six other guys who were also hand selected on campus to be in the shoot (they didn't pick ANY Berkeley girls... something about a reputation). Mixed in with the guys were several girls from modeling agency. As we got acquainted a couple people mentioned they had seen someone who looked Mischa Barton outside and made it seem like a big deal...
Who?
On the way to the first shooting location I asked one of the guys, "Who the hell is Mischa Barton?"
"OMGWTFerZ you don't know, FROM THE OC"
"O RLY?"
Well it didn't really go like that, but that's pretty much the gist how it happened... I don't watch the OC (I'm a Laguna Beach kinda guy) and don't intend to, but thought it was pretty cool how the chance to meet and be in the same ad happened so randomly...
Anyway, they shot all of us doing college-y things at different locales from 9 till 5 saturday and sunday.
It's the hardest (physically) I've worked since I worked in a warehouse packing auto parts on to conveyor belts and I'm tired as hell.
It's clear to me now that this will probably be the first and last modeling thing i'll ever do unless I'm getting paid 100K plus a weekend like Mischa. The girls from the agency said that modeling is a real grind and this was the most they've gotten paid for a gig despite it being their third or fourth year under contract. I'm just not built for this. I'd like to call shots, not appear in them.
The funny thing is after doing the math for the time spent on locale ($450 / 16hr ) I figured that I get paid more per hour running my company than I do doing this for a LOT easier funner, engaging work (Spreadsheets are our friends!).
At the end of the day though I can say it has been an interesting experience... I have new found respect for the people who grind it out and model regularly.
