sorry about the last thread i hit enter too early

a man that lives in my building is dying of cancer, he has no money becuase it is going toward the payment of his chemotherapy and surgery he just had. he is one of the most courageous people i have come in contact with. his one last wish was to own a computer and realizing that i have spare christmas and burfday money i am going to try to fulfill his wish, keep in mind that i am a college student and i am on a tight budget. what would you suggest to make a computer that is acceptable to give away, i have a network card/sound card. if you could point me to some websites *direct links appreciated* where i could find cheap parts. i am not asking for donations, thank you in advance.

Go either with newegg or visit got apex link

Almost every day they have Dell servers for like $299 after rebate or desptops w/crts for $400ish. That seems like it would be the fastest and cheapest alternative. I am all for custom built machines, but when no gaming/rendering is done, might as well be a cheap dell.

I don't have any computer advice to offer, but I do want to say that you're doing a very nice thing. :)

You're a twit.

As for the OP, I'd say go with Dell...their after-rebate prices are unbeatable. Good luck; you're doing a great thing.

i realized that i had a spare case back home and i found a site that's selling athlon mobo's (msi brand) for like $20 bucks with the first gen nforce chipsets so that saves on video and sound, and i have a network card, so i guess it's just a matter of finding a cheap monitor. thanks guys.

so i talked a guy into selling me his 400mhz imac for $150, comes with a 40gb harddrive 640mb ram/network/modem/keyboard/mouse. it's not a power machine but hey, it's free, i'm going to give him the computer tonight, i hope he accepts it and doesn't feel as if it's a handout.

I have come to know him better over the past couple weeks and I have found out that he does not have any family that is still living because they died of cancer. People visit him every so often but is alone most of the day recovering from chemotherapy. He's confined to his apartment, I can't imagine how lonely it feels. Hopefully things turn out for the better.

Is that a G4 iMac, if so that's a really nice computer. That will still hold up to many tasks that modern day PC's (I'd guestimate around a 1 GHz Pentium/Athlon which the average user still uses for word processing and email) are used for. Pkus with 640 MB of HDD space, Mac OS X will run very fast. You are a very nice person, and good luck to you and him.
