update: RESULTS: New to fantasy football...

I am in a 10 person FF league on ESPN, and we are drafting on Sunday. I will be drafting in the 8th spot.

UPDATE WITH RESULTS:

I actually ended up drafting in the 5th spot: here are my picks:

1) Tiki Barber, RB
2) Reggie Bush, RB
3) Anquan Boldin, WR
4) Tom Brady, QB
5) Plaxico Burress, WR
6) Tatum Bell, RB
7) Bears, DEF
8) DeAngelo WIlliams, RB
9) Vernon Davis, TE
10) Keenan McCardell, WR
11) Kurt Warner, QB
12) Adam Vinatieri, K
13) Curtis Martin, RB
14) Amani Toomer, WR
15) Bengals, DEF
16) Alex Smith, QB

Other than picking RB's in the first two rounds, don't lock yourself into taking a certain position. Pick the best players on the board and trade later!

This will be my first fantasy football league, so I need some help. Where can I get these "cheatsheets" that are referred to to aide in drafting?

I have been doing some reading, and it seems that the best thing to do in draft is:

Round 1: RB
Round 2: RB
Round 3: WR
Round 4: WR
Round 5: QB
...

Does this seem ok? Any other drafting advice? Which RB can I expect to be left by the 8th spot? I assume I will end up with two mediocre RB's, as opposed to a really good one, and a pretty crappy one since the drafting order reverses each round.

At your spot, you'll probably be looking at someone like Lamont Jordan, Steven Jackson, or Ronnie Brown. Westbrook, McGahee, Kevin Jones might be guys you'll be targeting in the second round.

RB, RB, WR, WR, QB is generally a good way to draft, but all in all it really depends on who is and isn't selected by the time your pick comes around. Be flexible if the situation calls for it.

For a start - check out the "Big Board" over at Yahoo. It's one guys rankings so take it with a grain of salt. But it at least puts all the big names out on one page.

http://fantasysports.yahoo.com/analysis...prov=yhoo&type=lgns&league=fantasy/nfl

From there, you can kind of see how things rank individually by position on this page:
http://fantasysports.yahoo.com/analysis...prov=yhoo&type=lgns&league=fantasy/nfl

As for what will be left. Hard to say. It'll probably go like this:

SA
LJ
LT
Riki tiki barber
Portis
...and then fuzzy from there
Rudi Johnson
Edge James
Stephen Jackson
Ronnie Brown
Lamont Jordan

In your postion, you'll probably be looking at getting Rudi Johnson or Ronnie Brown. On your way back around you might be able to nab another decent RB. Or you can go for a top flight WR like Steve Smith, Chad Johnson, Harrison, or Fitzgerald/Boldin. Or you could grab Peyton Manning. Just really depends on your feelings and individual league settings.

RB's are the anchors of your team. You NEED solid, consistent RB's to win. No other way around it. If you are in a position to grab two very grab RB's...do it. You can always trade later.

Yes, ALWAYS go for a good RB if you can... a good RB can haul in a very good WR + more usually...

On another note, I think Portis isn't quite deserving of the 5th spot anymore, as he is huring a bit and will lose some goal line TDs to Duckett now, I think.

That approach is going to leave you short on the stick when it comes to the QB position. I would go:
RB
RB
WR
QB
TE
WR or DEF

WR's are a dime a dozen.. there are far more productive recievers than QB's

thanks. When would be the earliest round I should look into getting a defense? If I dont make out real well near the beginning, would it be worth nabbing chicago a round or two early just to make sure I get a good defense?

It depends.. what is the scoring system for ESPN's league??

That is, overall, a pretty good strategy... I waited way too long on a WR last year though... I think I didn't pick one up until the 5th round lol.

speaking of fantasy football, DeAngelo Williams is available in one of my leagues. For some reason, I see him as someone that could be a sleeper.

edit: does anyone have ESPN insider, and want to PM me the top 200 list and the ranking by position list?

Kickers go fast so make sure you grab them first, you can always trade for a RB. Oh and by the way, Manning retired. Both of them.

Top 10 Scoring Defenses for last season:

Chicago Bears
Indianapolis Colts
Pittsburgh Steelers
Denver Broncos
Carolina Panthers
Jacksonville Jaguars
Seattle Seahawks
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Washington Redskins
Baltimore Ravens

Oh wow. Your league does that 3rd RB/WR flex position. DEFINITELY target the best RB's you can get. Chicago's defense could almost go in a very late 3rd round or early 4th basing off of last years performance.

Agreed. If you can manage to have 3 good RBs on your team, you have a very good chance to take one of the top spots in your league.

LOL classic advice!

For real though, don't mess with Defense before the 8th or 9th round. 11th or 12th round will get you a fine kicker.

Also, be sure to check your off weeks on like positions. If all your positions have the same off week you can get in some trouble there. (yes, I've done it)

Looks like you did very well. My only concern would be at TE. I can't believe the niners let Brandon Lloyd get away from them.

im also a little worried about whether branch not coming back will have a huge impact on brady.

Should I start warner for the first week of the season if branch hasnt come back yet? The cardinals seem like they will have a pretty big passing game...
