Update: It looks like the $99.99 price was a price mistake and it's now $129.99 before the $40 MIR
-----------------------------------------------------------
Mad Dog (MD-8XDVDRW-PM) 8x8x DVD±RW Drive (SKU#224527) $129.99 - $40 MIR = $89.99 + $5.99 ground shipping = $65.98 at Microcenter (Ends 4-25??)

BTY: It looks like this drive only comes with a "black" face plate.

Mad Dog 8x8x DVD±RW Drive

$40 Mad Dog rebate (You must register the Mad Dog product online to receive the rebate

I picked this up yesterday from Microcenter. On the Mad Dog box it says DVD+RW and DVD-RW are 4x, not 8x. I think it's a typo on Microcenter's site.

I would assume they have these at the local Microcenter B&M stores. Should make it a bit cheaper that way, if you happen to have one in your area (no shipping, but sales tax).

I know these are supposed be to rebadged NEC 2500A, but do they have the "Mad Dog" logo
on the front of the drive? I hate that "Mad Dog" logo. I prefer the plain OEM look.

I got one of these (it isn't in front of me at he moment) and it said something along the lines of:

1x DVD-RAM

on the side of the box in the specs. Is DVD-RAM a feature of a NEC 2500A?

[EDIT]

Looks like one guy over on FW thinks this might be a Toshiba SD-R5272 drive. I found the spec sheet for the SD-R5272 and it states DVD-RAM read capability. That feature is consistant with what I read on the box.

On the other hand, others at FW are saying they are getting the NEC 2500A. And several of those guys are claiming the the 2500A *may* be firmware upgradeable to dual layer in a few months when NEC releases the 2510A dual layer drive which is argued to be using the same hardware as the 2500A..

Has anyone here had a chance to look at their drive yet?

Very tempting. From what I read over at Bens, the rebates do come, but only after many months.
$66 (after rebate) for this or just get the OEM for $85 (no rebates).

I have an HP 300i now (for over a year). It's 4x, but I'm still considering getting in on this since it's dual-format, and I have a MC in my area. Can anyone confirm cjchaps's claim of the Mad Dog drive only being 4x. If I was going to upgrade, I'd want the 8x capability....although the black face would go nicer with my Dell 8300. :)

It's not unusuall for companies thet sell rebadged drives to change to a different brand of drive without changing the box that the new brand is sold in. So far I haven't heard anyone say that they found a Toshiba in their Mad Dog 8x8x DVD±RW Drive box.

Looks like a good deal but fore another $30 I can pick up a Pioneer A07, I am not sure about this brand. Does anyone know how it is?

Well if it is indeed the NEC, read the reviews posted in the first post by MysticMan1.

Just got the Mad Dog - It is a black face NEC ND-2500A.

The front of the drive has DVD R/RW Logo - DVD R/W Logo and a CD RW Logo - No Mad Dog logo. They are hard to see at a quick glance since its all black.

mrrman - It was compared against the A07 / 107 in the reviews linked and they were pretty much even.
