Edit for clarification:

Thanks to SSP and zboss and others for your suggestions but think there's a bit of a miss communication.

I already have a domain name and I know what dynip does, but these things aren't relevant to my problem.

The network my DSL provider uses prevents me from having a public IP. I have a unique IP within the VPN, but everyone on this network appears to have the same IP from the outside. They use some sort of Network address translation.

What I want to know is if there is any way around this, so that I can setup a Web server and host it publicly. If anyone knows for sure, your suggestions will be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

What do u mean "NAT" ?
Do u have a static or dynamic IP address?
Also what do u run it on ISS or what?

If your very new. At the dos prompt type "ipconfig /all" and give me the info.

He has some new wireless DSL in his complex that assgins them non routable IP's which is then translated into a routable Internet IP. He is wondering if he can get around it.

This is from Dynip service:

How does it work?
DynIP is an Internet Name server (DNS server) for people with changing Internet addresses. DynIP gives your computer an Internet Name that automatically tracks your computer's number (IP Address) each time you connect to the Internet. The DynIP Client can be used with any kind of Internet connection, including dial-up, cable-modem, ADSL, ISDN, wireless or LAN connections.

I'm not a network genius, so if I'm wrong, please don't flame me.

In order to get this to work I think it would require two things.

1. Access to the machine (or router)that is handling the NAT
2. Assigned static IPs on all of the machines that are on the network.

My router has an option to forward certain requests to a given IP address on the internal network. So, in theory, you could set up a FTP server or Web server on the internal system.

It is a work in progress for me, but I control the NAT on my network. I believe that would be key.

If the network is already set up with NAT, and you have access to it, it shouldn't cost much more than your time in setting it up and assigning IPs to all of the machines on the network.

He doesn't have access to the NAT. This is DSL at his apartment complex. Anyway, I am sure he will respond.

Slap is right, I don't have access to the router config. I'm at the mercy of my DSL provider so I will have to pay extra to get this capability....
