Ok I checked the monitor with another pc and it acually is the pc that is causing this all to look really dark. Now its prolly the vid card, but I will ask the hotel to reimburse my entire pc, at 900 originally I will have a higher amount to bargain with if they talk me lower. Is there anyway without alot of tools though to definately tell if its the GPU card or not? Also tested the vga cord and it was fine as well. They better give me alot for my cpu. Originally it did sound like the backligh went, alot of articles on the web sounded like my prob.

Never stay at a Marriott Courtyard, their wireless is alot slower and their lobby pc's are so bad. The above article was written three times, every 20 min the system logs you off so you need to reenter your name and room number. On so many occasions ive been logged off in the middle of a post. Ive so wanted to throw this lobby pc out the window. Thank you for your help.

:::eek:rig msg::::I had my psu socket spark huge when i turned my pc on and it shut the power down in 2 rooms. So I moved to a new room, turned on the pc this time making sure everything was connected well and it boots and gets into windows fine but the screen is extremely dark, so dark i can see the highlights of some icons can see some of the cursor, and a few other bright parts to the screen. some white things are too dark to see. Is this the video card or the mb, or maybe the monitor?

I can get in windows without a hitch, barely see anything login and move around windows fine, except i cant see 90% of whats there. So i think the mobo can be ruled out, all my hds show up in explorer. The vid card is atleast showing something, not much but atleast its working. So could it be the monitor? I cant swap anything cause Im away on business, brought my desktop cause its mad boring on the road and dont have a laptop.

What could it be.

Also anyone have an idea on how to approach the hotel on a reimbursment. the company is paying my board costs but the hotel should pay me for a fix right????

Sounds like the monitor is kaput to me. Usually when other hardware has gone out on me, I can never get into windows (I've had all the major components go out over the years: video card, ram, cpu, mobo, psu, hard drive, you name it).

Regarding the reimbursement question, you'll have to look into the specific hotel's policy regarding using computers in your room. I imagine you are likely to get some kind of compensation (maybe cash, but could be free night stay or something).

if you are in windows then the only thing it COULD be is the monitor... if the video card was broken it would either not boot, or it will boot without video (where even if you used remote desktop or VNC to connect it will have nothing to display)

If you can see things but very darkly then your monitor's lamp is broken.

You should connect a different monitor to your machine and see if it has the same effects. Doing this will narrow the source down significantly. Best of luck dude

EDIT: whoa, it is a desktop.

==========================

Wait, this is a laptop right? It may have switched into low-power mode or something like that. Try checking out your function keys to increase screen brightness.

What country were you in? What country are you from? Maybe it was the wrong voltage socket?

yeah... i've seen this on laptops.

if you can see all the icons on the screen while say shining a flashlight into it or having a desk lamp pointed at it, your LCD backlight just burned out. the power inverter in it also possibly could be damaged

thanks for all the info, ya the desktop idea in a hotel was stupid but in this city its so boring, i can only read so much ya know, and with crysis and gears of war, and ut2007, i have alot to play.

anyway ya if its the monitor then that is good as it was cheaper than the vid card, tho it sucks its my bros, i cant test all this out now but when i get home i will. thanks for the help anandtech forums are great,
