**Update on the 1987 Nissan 200SX Turbo!!!!

If you guys remember my previous thread, I was asking about buying a 1987 Nissan 200SX Turbo with 194k km.

Today I went again and started it up. Note the battery was dead, so the guy had to boost it. Anyway it starts up and upon giving it a little gas, I noticed light blue smoke coming from the tailpipe. Note, their is a leak in the exhaust (which is audible).

Also at idle the boost guage is at -5, then upon revving the engine lightly it flutters around 0. However, the biggest problem was that the engine wouldn't rev past 3000RPM! I kept on giving it gas, and it would hesitate then go up to 2k rpm and then 3k RPM. But it would never go above 3k rpm. So I'm thinking something is seriously fscked up with the car and am going to leave it.

The guy said he's willing to sell it as is for $800, and if I get him to certify it and make sure it runs properly he wants $1500 (which includes new battery, muffler, tune up..). Note, that I wasn't talking to the guy who owns the car. Here's the little background, the car is sitting on the parking lot in front of a car-parts store and a German mechanic garage (they had a nice 356 replica in there!). Anyway, the owner of the car works part time at the German garage and gave the keys of the car to both, the garage owners and the car-parts shop owners. I was talking to the car-shop parts guy.

I dunno, I'm kinda wary of the car. If it won't run properly now, who knows whwat will happen next.

So any input guys *cough*Quixfire*cough*??? 😉

sometimes they have a neutral rev limiter unless it's in gear and you are giving it crap....

automatic Neons have a rev limiter to 3K RPM also...

possibly the case?
how'd it run under 3,000?

yeah but in that case it would rev right up to 3 and just get a fuel cut-off. It wouldnt' sputter its way to 3000RPM. In any case, I don't think Nissans have that (atleast the ones that I have encountered).

Its just the whole thing seems shady to me.

" noticed light blue smoke coming from the tailpipe" - Could be an indication that the car is burning oil (could be valve and/or ring problem). Take it to a mechanic & have a compression check.

Walk away. Probably the ECM or Crank Angle sensor gone.

Seriously. I wouldn't recomend it. If he will let you, you could run the codes on the ECM but I still don't like the sounds of it.

The 200SX won't have a rev-limiter on it other than the fuel cut off at 6000+RPM. You should be able to rev it out in neutral no problem.

I dunno dude I wouldnt rule this car out yet.. it's a pretty COOL car and if it's something simple that can be fixed, it's worth buying... I'd love to own one of those..... 🙂

Thats my dilema too. While its not an outstanding car by any means (ie: it doesn't excel in any one area), its still a damn cool car to own, and I love the looks of it. And for $800 you can't really go wrong (if the car runs!).

But the thing is, I don't NEED a car. I mean I won't be using it in the winter. Its just that I'd really like a manual car to drive again (and I'm getting jealous with all my friends driving manuals after being in my previous car!). Man I really want to get back into a fun-to-drive RWD 5-spd car...I miss the feeling! 🙁

Bah. Typical mid 80s japanese sports car.

Buy a great shape 300ZX Turbo either an 85-88 if you want the look and power. Somewhat easier to find, more of a community and more power to boot.

but the 200SX turbo is more rare, and easier to find in a 5 speed.. i dont find too many turbo 5 speed 300Z's... this one's a diamond in the rough. i almost like the 200SX better.

that's waht I was thinking. But I have no idea how to go about diagnosing it. On top of that, I don't think those guys are taking me seriously, me looking young and all.

The vacuum and reving problem could be a jumped timming belt/chain. What do those things use anyway? Going to 0 in in park is normal. A turbo won't build boost unless there is a load on the engine. The oil if it burning constanly could be the turbo. If its only burning at start up its probably the valve guide seals which really isn't a big deal.

I'd pass

yeah I think I'll do that too.

I'm such a cheap ass....I was either gonna spend money to get a car or spend money to get shocks/springs for the Maxima (parent's car). Now I don't feel like getting springs. I probably won't even spend hte money I worked for this summer.

Initial D ??? any influences from that??? then finding the corolla of all times would be superb

AE86s are expensive. Finding a non-rusted AE86 up here in Canada is damn hard. And a non-rusted AE86 is FREAKING expensive (for what it is).

The 200SX in question is relateively rust free (for a 80s Japanese car its awesome).

Hey CraigRT, if I don't get it, I'll give you the location of it so you can check it out.

Have an independant mech look at it.

I'd check compression and timing belt (valve timing). Good chance just a head rebuild would take care of everything!

FYI the engine code of that car should be CA18DET. Its a good strong iron block engine. the 1st year silvias were using the CA's untill they switched with the SR's. I beleive the nissan pulsars used the CA18DE non turbos so parts can be found. like someone said i would a compression check and then look for a vacumm leak.
