I replaced the K6/266 with a K6-III+, setting the multiplier from X4 to X6. FSB is not changeable at 66MHz. The computer works. I tried with and without Write Allocation turned on, as well as a comparison with a Super Socket 7 desktop with 100MHz FSB. Sandra figures:
K6/266: CPU - 649. FPU - 318. Memory - 55. FP Memory - 79.
K6-III+/400: CPU - 866. FPU - 480. Memory - 74. FP Memory - 113.
K6-III+/400 W: CPU - 1004. FPU - 483. Memory - 83. FP Memory - 89.
K6-III+/500: CPU - 1257. FPU - 605. Memory - 146. FP Memory - 158.
Write allocation seems to help, except for the FP Memory figure. Any explanation for why that went down?
Also, I need to run Windows 2000 Professional on this computer. I installed, and everything seems to work except for the built-in modem, which is not important to me. However, I can't find a program at AMDZONE to set Write Allocation within Windows 2000. Does anyone know of such a utility?
There is still life in the old box!
