I just install the 4.50 4-in-1 driver on my XP machine and now it won't reboot. I found this thread over at the VIA support forum.

WOW! These drivers are bad!!!!! This is what I did, create a restore point then install VIA 4.50 drivers ,I then rebooted and got write-failure,so rebooted again and press F8 and select "last known good configuration" anyway when I got to desktop I notice when I tried to play any MP3 via Windows Media Player 9 I got an error and had to download latest version of WMP 9 for it to play MP3s etc(not sure if this is related to the VIA 4.50 drivers ) anyway all is fine now but do not install those VIA drivers thay are bad for XP.

First time I have had any VIA driver nearly mess my PC up(btw only have 512mb ram here).

Thx Quixfire, lucky I read your link and created a restore point :).

You are welcome, but I am unable to restore my machine. I got it working well enough to access files, but it looks like I will be reformating and reinstalling Windows XP.

Happy Thanksgiving to me!!!

Thanks VIA you guys suck, my next board will be a NForce2.

What's the benefit to these? I've got a Win2K partition with an Asus A7V266-E (Via KT266E chipset), and I just use the standard Microsoft drivers, and it works fine. Any performance increase or new features?

Update:After I downloaded WMP 9 I also notice I had 5 critical updates that needed to be downloaded from Microsoft`s Update site(I had checked just before I installed the 4.50 drivers and there was no updates) & Chkdsk had to repair my drive on reboot ,so the 4.50 drivers seem to do quite a lot of damage, anyway I`ve just reinstalled the 4.49 hyperion drivers which installed fine with no problems.

VIA need to look at why the 4.50 drivers are causing havoc in a lot of users computers, just go over to the VIA Arena forum and you`ll see the thread on the 4.50 drivers is getting bigger all the time with major problems.

Anyway stick with the VIA Hyperion 4.49 drivers for now and you`ll be fine ;).

I'm pretty sure why they wreaked havoc with my machine. I noticed a lot of delayed write failed errors and such and checked my advanced settings under preformance and memory usage was set to system cache and processor scheduling was set to background processes. This wreaks havoc with my comp so I set them back to what they were before. However, apparently for some reason they don't save those and when I rebooted they were back to the bad settings again. So after a third try just to be sure it wasn't a fluke, I went into safe mode and used the system restore.

So for some reason these drivers are forcing windows preformance settings.

Really weird since the 4.50 drivers only have a updated INF file ,which is from 1.90b to 2.00a.I checked my performance and memory settings and both are ticked for programs.

Btw Fallout2man welcome to AT forums.

A few people have had some sucess uninstalling 4.50 and reinstalling 4.49. I thought I tried this last night, but I was busy reloading windows 98se on my friends computer and can't remember.

I'll try this again tonight and let you know if it works for me.

The newest Via chipset I have is the KT266a, I haven't seen fit to use newer Hyperion's since 4.46. Am I missing anything? Are the Hyperions good for KT266a up to 4.49?

Thanks, I guess it was just a problem with my machine, but I'm pretty sure that was causing at least some of the bugs for me. Of course, the computer gods curse me with many faulty hardware components so who knows what else it mght've been. :p

OK gang, this is really getting out of hand. I am unable to run any program on my machine, access the network, or even get my burner to work. I have tried system restore, restoring my registery, and searching for the inf files to delete them without any success.

I am very pissed off about this! :| I am going to lose everything on my pc that hasn't been burned to a cd since my last back up, two months ago.

The problem is not related to the large cache issue that some computers have with ATI drivers. I didn't have any trouble with my system before the update and have been running more than a gig of ram with ATI drivers for 9 months.

Please Pray for Me!

God Bless,
Quixfire

OK, I finally got it. I was able to get into safe mode and restore the system from last Saturday. Once there I uninstalled the 4.5 drivers and video card drivers. Rebooted, installed the 4.49 drivers, rebooted and installed the video drivers and it seems to working fine. I haven't put back my other stick of ram yet, but will do that in the morning.

Thanks for the support guys. :D

I'm glad to hear you've managed to repair your system temporarily Quixfire. I'd take this opportunity to backup all your data, format c:, and do a clean install.

VIA says that the new hypo's arent recomended for older systems.

(they are tweaked as best they will ever be)

IF IT AINT BROKE >>> DONT FIX IT

... always make a backup before attemping an upgrade ...
(it cheap and quik to restore using imaging ... no reason not to)

all these problems for a stupid ... ini file update ... go figure
