kreton ram? wtf is that? this must be a complete budget system I'm assuming with the AOpen and Kreton and no DVDRW...I'd be grabbing a 2.6C and investing any extra into more reputable ram, but that's me. Also, why are you wasting 10.99 on a floppy drive?? Grab one out of a 486 and paint it black if u need one that bad.

I'm using Kreton 3200 RAM on my Asus A7N8X with a 2500 Barton oc'ed to 3200 and I have no problems. I would agree about the floppy though.

Overclocking the barton from 2500+ to 3200+ is not difficult with the a7n8x because the CPU and memory clocks are asynchronous (Ive got one). If you buy that Krapton ram for your P4 you will most likely find you have an unstable system. Besides the 3-4-4-8 timings suck.
Go back to this page and find some decent memory. OCZ maybe.
Also check this article about memory timings, it says the speed of the P4 is really sensitive to poor memory timings. More so than the AMD. Now there is an idea - scrap the P4 for an A64 3200!

But remember, it's your computer. Nobody is going to come to your house and make fun of you because you bought something the rich and famous hardware experts don't like.

sony cdrw? The 90's called and they want their stuff back? get yourself a cheap and nice liteon DVDRW. Lose the floppy drive, usb keychains have replaced them now. U can get one of those later if you feel the need (they are around 30 bucks). Everything else looks fine to me.

I just put another 512 of ram in my A7N8X with XP Pro and ran some benchmarks. It made no difference. I now have 1 GB of Kingston HyperX 2-2-2-6T in dual channel mode with a 2500 OC'd to 3200. The extra 512 was a waste of money. I also rip DVD's and render DV Camcorder video on this rig. I have watched the memory usage to see if I was using the full gig while running the tough apps so I wouldn't feel so bad about having bought it and have found that the system only uses around 700MB. Waste of money.

I recommend the pair of 256's and 2.8C. Remember that P4's processing power scales excellently with increased speed. The Aopen board may not overclock very well so you will need all the stock speed you can get. Also, the faster timing ram WILL get you an increase in speed over the 512 at slower timings.

Hope you enjoy the new rig!

Where do I begin. Lemme start with your case. Your case is a monster and the fans in it are loud. I owned it for a day before I rma'ed it. The ram you are using is garbage. Who the hell is kreton? I suggest Muskin pc3500 level one at 200 bucks at newegg. Your mobo also isnt too hot. I suggest getting at least an asus p4p800-e if your not overclocking and An Abit Icy-mac3 if you are. The video card you are getting isnt the best performer and a 9800 pro is right up your alley. While it is 90 bucks more, It is worth every cent and you will be able to run games at full detail on it. The 9600 pro will have trouble tackling some games. The next thing is the intel preference. I think that for the money, the athlon 64 3000+ is the best deal. For about 20 bucks less with mobo and cpu, you get much better performance for gaming. An athlon 64 3000+ and abit board will give you MUCH better performance than the p4. I think if you want the best system for the money, here are the specs.

9800 pro - 219 @ Newegg
2x512 Muskin pc3500 Level one - 199 @ newegg
Athlon 64 3000+ @ around 200 last I checked again newegg.
Case is personal so I wont go there
Samsung 16xdvd48xcdr drive combo, 69 bucks @ newegg.
Abit sock754 max3 board. Something like 150 at newegg.
Lastly I would suggest getting some thermal grease. I suggest Arctic Silver 3 thermal compound. The smalest tube will work.

More ram is an investment for the future right now more ram isn't nessacary, unless you play the lastest games that seem to use 750 when they get a chance... why do no people understand this... well it's more relevent with video cards where you can't just go out and buy an extra stick of video ram. Since your going to be running in dual channel getting two 512s is probably better then 2 256 and then when you need more another 2 256 or 2 512s since I've theres a performance hit on 4 sticks of dual channel but I just heard this and don't have a base for it so maybe it's not a good idea. Also you might want to consider being able to get 2 gigs without running out of slots... but even I'll do a mobo upgrade before 2 gigs is useful.
