We go out tpo eat Indian food all the time. Makahni Chicken is delicous and we always order it. It costs $12.95 at the resturaunt. Well, she decided she was going to try to make it for me. Total for all the ingredients....$30+. $13 just for a little container of a particular spice at the grocery store. we could have bought almost three take out orders from the resturaunt for the amount she has invested in this ambition of hers. She's downstairs cooking it now........I havent told her yet.......it doesnt smell like it does a the resturaunt.

*UPDATE*
It didnt taste like the food we get in the resturaunt, but it did taste good and spicy. I told her I liked it and I got a BJ out of the whole thing.

At least she is trying. Let her keep trying and it will be good sooner or later. Plus cheaper, later on.

If you ever want to get some from her for the next month, you had better lie and say it tastes just like it does in the restaurant or better.

Don't worry about the $30 + 13 for the spices. That's the initial investment. You can probably keep reusing that same spice container for many times making the recipe right? Saves money in the long run to make your own food and eat at home. Next time she wants to make the recipe she'll probably have stuff left over from the first time that you won't have to buy again. Plus, she's probably making a lot more of it than you would get for $12.95 each in a restaurant. Hope it comes out good. I think it's actually very charming that she's trying. You should encourage her.

LOL there's your problem. You're going to a regular grocery store. Go find an Indian store. You'll definitely get it a hell of a lot cheaper. Indians don't like paying @ssloads of money for food :)

besides the cost, it's just a lot of fun to try to make something new that you love to eat.. and if it doesn't turn out right the first time, trying to figure out how to make it better is also fun

the only thing that expensive is saffron, that i can think of anyway.
it was probably a quarter or a half of an ounce, and should last a few dishes.

otherwise, the place hes getting it at doesnt actually use saffron (and at 12 bucks a plate, i doubt they do) and his will taste different (indeed, it clearly smells different) because of this, and perhaps her recipe differing from the restaurant.

OP: does she cook much anyways?

That's why you need a father-in-law in the military. We get big containers of saffron for free :D
