I'm stoked, managed to increase my overclock and it's considerably cooler :)

Was a fiddly job getting the hsf off tho :p

I believe there used to be a Arctic Cooler for them?

Besides that, what sort of case/cooling do you have, and what's ambient?

Aluminium case, running with the side off atm, three 80mm case fans. Ambient was at least high 20'Cs today (no ac and it was 33 outside).

If there is an arctic cooler one for the AGP 6600GT that would be cool too :)

No A/C in Aus as summer is peaking....whoooo no thank you

EDIT: Have you tried just putting an 80mm and having it blow directly on the vid card?

the vf 700 fits on with a bit of work.

i had an evga i put it on and it helped alot. because of the core placement and the smallish case i had it in i had to bend the fins about to allow the side case on.

also, some of the ram is so close to the gpu that you'll need to bend or snip off some of the ram sink fins so that they fit under the "flower" of the vf700 sink. if you can understand what i'm saying (soory, just woke up)

but it works and brought my temps way down, from like 94c load to mid 60's iirc.

Hmmm that's too bad.

If it bothered me enough that I'd want to start cobbling on it with aftermarket coolers, I'd just sell it and buy a used 6800NU for not much more than the sale price.

It's a superior card, runs much cooler due to 325 vs 500MHz core, and doesn't cost much more. When you add the cost of an aftermarket fan to the equation, it's kind of a no brainer IMO.

What do you want? A 6600GT that you've added a $25 hsf to that may/maynot cool it significantly, or to spend $50-$75 more on a card that is a lot better, cooler to start with. It would be worth another $25-$50 to me.

What is idle temp? "Some 6600GTs are notorious for bad heatsink contact."

That was going to be my suggestion as well. I have seen some pretty concave heatsinks over the years. If you have the time, you might want to considering lapping your HS and applying Arctic Silver (or thermal paste of your choice).

my idle temps are 58-60'C, which is on par with most other people i know running AGP 6600GT's with the stock hsf i think.

Again, why bother with this stuff for so little cash? 6800NU for you, and if you get one of the 50% that unlock to 16/6 cards, you'll have REALLY changed your gaming experience.

My leadtek (and my cousin's) 6600gt idles at 42-44...

I'd look into the Zalman for your 6600gt. if you have good airflow in the case, it will help.

I'd take a few minutes & at least pull the card out to take a look at the HS... if its not making contact with the GPU its an easy fix that should cost next to nothing.

yeah i might try that for starters.

some AS5 would sort it if it isn;t right?

QFT rollo, i took a chance on the 6800nu, and it unlocked succesfully for me with all 16pipes+shader with no artifacts, but it ran pretty warm with the stock cooler(+55c idle) until i placed a NV5 silencer and now it idles around 46-47c and haven't seen it go past 56c.

Go for the Zalman VF700...your temps are just too high ;)
With the VF700Cu and AS5 you can expect (speaking from experience) ~40C idle and ~70C max loaded. This is for the VF700 fan @7V (12V is too loud, 7V is not noticeable)...
Temps also consider the overclock involved ;)

As said by several people, take a look at your heatsink. My 6600GT PCIe card was hitting 92C in Far Cry. I reset the heatsink and now it hits 62C. Idle is around 42C.

i think i'll do that.

worth reseating it with as5, or will cheaper thermal paste do the trick?

I have that zalman heatsink cooler, puts out quite alot of air and can be used on all sorts of graphics cards. I have the fatility one or however you spell it, all red. Keeps my x1800 xl at 45-50C load at 50-60C

Dug- the Zalman will cut your temperatures like nuts - probably ~20C off your idle and up to 30C off your load temps as long as you install it properly with some AS5 :) . My 6800GT (which also runs hot as hell) went from 59C idle/86C load on stock cooling to 49C idle/61C load (and overclocked 50 Mhz) using the Zalman VF700Cu .

I've come to the conclusion that NVSilencers are wonky and would probably avoid using them. I bought an NV Silencer5 rev2 and used it on my 7800GT and 6800GT; the retention mechanism on the back uses a flimsy backplate that allows some wiggle room with the cooler so it doesn't make perfect conact with the GPU core. I've had nothing but success with ATI silencers (used an ATI4 and an ATI5) but something about the backplate on the NV5 makes it not clamp down tight on the GPU. The Zalman is designed so that it grips the GPU tight like a vice, with rubber spacers in there to make sure the contact is just tight enough.

Furthermore, the NV Silencer 6 (which I think works on the 6600GT PCI-e only anyways) seems to have a heatsink that's about half the size of the heatsink on the NV5, ATI Silencer 5, etc. Whereas the Zalman is always the same size ;) .

I thought you didn't mod cards because it was illegal/amoral/evil and all that stuff ;) . Or it's ok to software mod 6800nu's for extra performance, but not to overclock other cards?

Besides I wouldn't say a 6800nu @ 16/6 makes much sense this day and age. It's a stopgap between the 6600GT (which performs pretty comparably, especially when overclocked) and the X800XL/6800GT class cards.

i'll give that a shot, then if it doesn't improve the situation i'll go a zalman i think...

dug, I surprised you didnt reset the heatsink in the first place. Thats almost the first thing I do with any video card. AS5 is your friend
