UPDATE: I downloaded a few files from a news-server but what do I do with them now?

I've been looking on the net for recordings of Howard Stern's show and from what I've researched it appears that full versions of his shows can be found on news servers. Unfortunately I have no idea what a news server is or how to access them, is anyone here familiar with gaining access to one and downloading content?

EDIT:

Does anyone know what to do with the files from the news server? I downloaded a few messages from the howard stern news group through outlook express. If I save them directly to a folder on c they carry the eml extenstion. How do I decode those files/messages into an audio file?

1. get a news group program (i always liked the design of newsXpress which i think many ones now mimic)
2. find out your news server from the ISP info
3. double click a lot!

You are correct. alt.binaries.howard-stern

I use easynews for my newsgrouping, but it's $10 a month. Trial period though I think? You can find almost anything here though, it's worth the $10 IMO. VERY easy to use.

Thanks guys, I can't wait to get home and try this out. Finally I can have something to listen to at work instead of hearing my co-workers fight and complain.

My ISP was just acquired by Japan Telecom, and I received an email from them telling me the configuration for the new servers -- including a Usenet server which my previous ISP didn't have! Woohoo!

There is a WEALTH of information available on Usenet. Quite literally almost anything you could want (and many things you don't!).

I used to spend quite some time on newsgroups in 92/93... But not really since. The only thing they seem to be good for nowadays is for generating a lot of spam (by posting your email address online) and for downloading warez (with newsbin and tools like that). Can't really be bothered to use it anymore, use forums for chatting and news instead.

MANCOW is a better morning show in my opinion. After you get used to him, the show is quite funny. There is a streaming link on his page that sometimes works. mancow.com He's out of Chicago.

I used to listen to mancow from time to time but I just never liked the show as much as Howard, although some of the prank calls were funny

Somewhere, I've written a nice tutorial on howto access newsgroup binaries...I wonder where it could be...
*cough*see sig*cough*

Another newsgroup for various radio shows:
alt.binaries.sounds.radio.misc.
Forte's "Agent" is a good newsreader program.
Teranews.com still has "free" accounts (50 MB download/day) , after a one-time $3.95 setup fee.

Theres tons. Everyone uses a different one.

Agent is decent. If you have multiple servers, you probably want NewsPro or NewsBin. Depends on what you are doing with newsgroups. Outlook would work if you are just looking at articles and messages.

I have a similar question.

I.. um.. backed up some stuff thanks to newsgroups, they're supposed to be mpegs (get your mind outta the gutter 😉 ), but they're saved as text files. Help?

You are doing it ALL wrong. Get a program like Newsbin Pro. Connect to the Howard Stern newsgroup. Say you are looking for episode 26. The files for episode 26 will look like this :

Epidos26_Here_it_Is_01.mpg[1/60]

The last number (01.mpg) will go upto 40 or 50. Download all those files.

THen get winrar, select just one of those download files and say "Extract Here". You will get a single file called "Episode26.mpg"

Outlook can do it but the problem is outlook doesn't normally decode the encoding. Everything will just look like garbled text. Using a newsreader will do all the work for you.
