Well I was using a old cpu fan that was barely doing its job for my AMD 1700 cpu..... But it never over heated.... I just got a new cpu cooler from SVC a few days ago and I hooked it up today....

Here's the thing.... I couldn't find my artic silver so I was so excited I just attached the new CPU cooler sans thermal or arttic ... naked if you will!!!

The machine was only on for 30 secs when I get an alarm from my motherboard!!!! I never heard it before but I set the BIOS for fatal shutdown on 70c for the CPU....

Right now the power turns on and all fans seem to be running, but I get nothing on video? So I can't even get into bios.... Is my cpu toast?

Any advice all knowing ones? thanks!

Probably.

Bad idea there, turning it on without anything. Very bad. you either killed the processor or the motherboard, or both.

I think he meant that he didn't use any thermal grease/paste. Just a HSF.

Yes exactly...... Is there a way to tell if the CPU .... Or the Motherboard is fried? If the Cpu was dead would I be able to get into bios?

Put another processor in your mobo , if it doesn't do anything its fried.

Put your processor in a diff. motherboard, if it doesn't do anything its fried.

Jose

well, if the cpu is dead, it shouldnt even power on (fans spin up, etc) do the harddrives, cdroms spin up?

check the whole cpu for any burn marks or discolouration. good luck! :)

Nasty burn smell on the HSF and a burn mark......

All fans and hds and CD's spin up...... I am not getting any video signal to the monitor though...

Hehehe I know I shouldnt laugh but there is a funny side to that story, ive been like that sometimes, when you get a new piece of kit you just seem to lose all sense of reason in your need to get it running. Try clearing the CMOS using the jumper on your motherboard, its possible that your system went into auto-shutdown on reaching a critical temperature and your BIOS has been corrupted. Its possible that if you clear ithe CMOS then reboot you might be able to get into the BIOS. Presuming your chip isnt fried that is... :)

ok, so seems like your chip isnt dead, yet

try clearing the CMOS like Richdog said, or try a different video card if you can

that is incorrect. Just because CPU being dead don't mean fans won't spin up from the motherboard. ;)
you can also have ram not present and still be able to run all the fans. ;)

you have nothing on the motherboard except the PSU, you can power up your board and turn all the fans you as you wish. You can even turn the Peltier on if you would like. ;)

mmm....crispy athlons... but anyway, my friend booted up an XP 2000 palomino with NO heatsink at all. after diving at the power switch, put the heatsink on and lucky for him, it worked. Never know....stranger things have happened, like Michael Jackson having 'his own' kids :)

lol, their even white, and hes still whiter then them. hahahaha! :D

as for your cpu, id try clearing the cmos. if that dont work, it could be toast. but you would know if it was toast just by the smell, and u would see burn marks, normally.

UPDATE: The new AMD 1700 Arrived from Newegg and I am back up and running again (this time with a a good amount of Thermal paste)

...... So the motherboard wasn't completely toast ..

However ... I had all three mem banks filled with 256/128/128 and now only the left bank is registering anything....

With one bank filled (on left...) it boots normally.

With two and or all three banks filled I get an WINNT error during boot...

With only banks 2 and or 3 loaded (right 2 and 3 banks) NO BOOT and I get a loud long BEEEP!

Is this something that can be cleared thru CMOS or is something damaged?

thanks in advance.

Have you tried each memory stick in the working slot ?? Its possible your memory timings are too agressive, try backing them way down to see if you can get something to work. Tweaking memory voltage to 2.6 maybe 2.65 could also help.
