okay, so here is the scenario:
i'll be earning $45,000 for the next year. i'm actually going to try to go to grad school so i'll have to stop working when sept 2003 comes around. so techincally, i'll only have 12 months of pay to use in order to pay off the car before grad school. also, i have about $8k in debt b/c of my undergraduate loans.

so figuring out that out of $45k, i'll be actually getting about $31,500 after taxes, what do you think is the wisest decision to make in order to get the best car as well as being safe considering that i have $8k in loans to payback... my choices consist of:

acura rsx type s ($22k)
nissan altima 3.5se ($25k)
toyota celica gts ($21k)
2002 honda accord coupe v6 ($21k)
(all prices are before tax)

edit...
well it seems as if people are worried that i have expenses to think of. well i'm actually living with my parents during the year that i'll be working, so i honestly don't have any expenses. i have to pay for my cell phone/cable modem and that's it. those two comes out to be $100/month, so it's not that much. so basically, i'll have $31,500/12 - $100 = $2,525 to spend every month. on top of that, if i want to go out and stuff, i'll prolly need about an additional $200/month. and for those worried about insurance, it'll cost me about $2,000/year (or $166,67/month) for any of the cars listed above (it'll actually be less, but i'm using the g35 coupe as the base for the insurance).

so basically, i'll have
$31,500/12 = $2,625
$2,625 - $100 = $2,525 (after bills)
$2,525 - $200 = $2,325 (after money to spend monthly)
$2,325 - $170 = $2,155 (after insurance)
$2,155 - $670 = $1,485 (minus paying back $8k loan)

so i'll have $1,485 left to spend on the car per month. also, i have $8k already saved up for the down payment... so keeping that in mind... what should i get???

acura rsx type s ($22k - $8k = $14k/12 = $1,170)
nissan altima 3.5se ($25k - -$8k = $17/12 = $1,420)
toyota celica gts ($21k - $8k = $13k/12 = $1,090)
2002 honda accord coupe v6 ($21k - $8k = $13k/12 = $1,090)

Or, how about option 6) none of them are a smart choice if you are going to be having zero income in a year. Whey spend ALL of your money on a car when you can spend $10k-$15k on a nice, used Accord or Maxima. Don't blow your wad on a car. If you have zero income, how are you going to pay insurance? Registration?

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Especially if you've already got $8,000 in debt.

Speaking from experience here.

Buy used, save money up front. Save money on insurance. Save money on registration. Bank the rest because you are going to need it.

Agreed. I'm abstaining from voting until there is a "buy used" or "don't buy" option.

I will always vote for my Altima, but if you really plan on paying off a car in one year on a 45K salary, you should be looking at a 6000 dollar car instead of a 25000 dollar car. I make more than that and it's taking me five years to pay off my Altima, plus I have no debts like yours. What about living expenses? Rent, phone, cable, electricity, water, etc. really add up quickly, you know....

The G35 is kind of in a whole other price range then those other cars.

I'd vote for the G35 but then I think you should save up first.

Agreed. Buy a used Accord or Maxima. If you MUST buy new I'd get the Accord coupe.

You think you can buy a $22-31K car on credit and have it paid off in a year on a $45K/year job? You know fed + state taxes will be paid off that $45K right, not to mention living expenses, insurance, etc??!

If you really think you can do it, then buy the cheapest form of transportation possible (or keep what you already have, if you have anything at all) and save the $22-31K + taxes, pay cash at the end of your work engagement-- then again, what will you use to pay for insurance and upkeep on it in the following years?

You are either:

1) Incredibly naive

or

2) Incredibly stupid

You'll have to make $700 a month payments just to pay off your $8K in current debt, add a $2K a month car payment, $200 insurance, and you're far, far above what you can logically expect to cover with a $45K a year job. Even if you COULD pay $1,500 a month on a car, you couldn't afford ANY of those cars. 1500 * 12 = $18,000. That's Honda Civic territory, not Infiniti G35.

Your budget should be under $10K, probably closer to $5K given your current $8K in debt.

Buy some cheap used car, get yourself out of debt, and then save some money for when you have no income.

Even if you are living with your parents, you should still consider getting a used car. Why not sock some of the money away in retirement accounts or something? New cars are financially not a great idea in the first place, plus as others have said, you will soon have ZERO income along with more debt from your grad school loans (if you are taking some out).

Believe me, in 5 years when you are thinking "gosh, you sure need a lot of money for a down payment on a house!" you will wish you had not put your money into an asset that depreciates as quickly as a new car.

I would call that "Smart" ;)

Not if he drives a car like he thinks he can afford. (which he can't)

Nothing spells "LOSER" quite like an adult living with his mommy and daddy, all expenses paid, but driving a $30K car.

Unless his parents need him to live at home, I definitely agree.
