I was taking my secondary hard drive out of my pc today, and placing it in a pc im selling. When i turned on my computer again, everythin was fine "running on a western digital 120gb 8mb* then later it blue screened "dumping memory etc...*

I rebooted my system, win2k hangs at startup and doesn't even make it past the "press F8 for advanced startup options" screen.

No form of recovery helped me restore it
I then tried formatting my C drive it tells me "partition corrupted or damaged"

so eventually after failing miserably to install windows on the HD. I had to put the other drive back in this time as a master

All my other partitoins seem fairly intact but the drives making a weird noise. Now the thing im worried about is the best way to get the data off, ive been tryin to salvage what i can onto CD but 120gb is an awful lot. So i decided i wanted a new hard drive anyway to use in an external bay. Instead of waiting ill get it now....

So first any advice on how to check whats happened to my drive would be appreciated

secondly
The two options i have are another WD 120gb for 80pounds *about $130 or an IBM 180gb 8mb for around 110pounds *about $170

is the IBM drive any good, or should i just go wd *or seagate, which is the same price as teh WD*

try to recover a much as possible but b4 you do that stick the HDD in a water proof sealing thing and stick it in the freezer overnight...

Wow....so did mine two days ago... I already got my RMA for it too, they shipped it 2nd day air. 🙂

Also call Western Digital, its still under warranty probably.

magomago is right stick the hard drive (after putting it in a properly sealed bag) in the freezer. The drive should work (depending on whats actually wrong) for about 20 minutes or until the drive warms up. You will only get 4 to 5 tries at this, and in absolute worst cases only the first freeze works. So be quick and don't waste time.

I personally freeze things with swirling ice water (anyone seen a wine chiller, they work great!) but the freezer works fine, just alot slower to thoroughly freeze things. Good Luck!

I've got a WD JB that just stopped working.
I got up from my computer and it rebooted by itself. It would not boot into Windows 2000 at all. I got the no system disk found message.
The BIOS setup showed no HD at all.
I shut it off for a few hours then restarted. It booted into 2000 that time. It ran slugishly for a couple of minutes, getting slower and slower.
I shut it down, pulled the HD and stuck it in the freezer.

About 5 or 6 hours later I reinstalled it. It booted up into Windows 2000 just fine. It seemed to be running just fine.
I burned the data I needed and waited for it to freak out again. I downloaded WD's diagnostic utilities and ran them.
Both the Quick and the Extended tests showed no errors with the drive.

That was over a week ago and, it's still up and running! 😀

Ok ive got all the data off it, tried using Western digitals diagnostic tools, wiped the hard drive, found out that it has too many unrecovarable bad sectors.

Problem is i bought this drive at Fry's Electronics just outside of Phoenix AZ, but i live in the UK. It says on the western Digital website that my warranty isn't valid to get a replacement.

So what the hell do i do?? It said at the store that it came with a 1yr warranty and i only bought it back in January.

Ill be going back to AZ in September, but it had a lot of mp3's, software *like about 80gb worth* etc.. on there that id really rather not explain in a foreign country "noticed they are cracking down on that kind of thing recently*. I deleted all the partitions, but i know that data is retrievable if they really want to get at it.

Do you think i should try and take it back to Fry's? or send it to a local Western digital facility. I really don't know what to do. Or have I basically just lost the drive for good.

if your going to be AZ long enough ,send it in from there. WD doesn't care what info is on it. they get LOTS of drives back every day and have no time to see what they can find on a dead\dying drive. i dont see why anyone else (customs ?) would care about you bringing in a HD.
WD says
No warranty service is provided unless the Product is returned to an authorized return center in the region(Americas, Europe-Middle East-Africa, or Asia Pacific) where the Product was first shipped by WDC.
i would call and ask if you can ship it directly to a U.S. return center. it sounds like you just can't take your U.S. drive to a european center.
No limited warranty is provided by WDC unless your WDC Product ("Product") was purchased from an authorized distributor or authorized reseller. Distributors may sell Products to resellers who then sell Products to end users.
worse comes to worse i would be happy to forward your dead drive and ship you the replacment.i'm in LA and it cost me $5.00 to ship a drive up to them and takes about 4-5 days to get it back.
PM me if you want to try something like that , but i would try calling first.
good luck

I called WD myself to ask them about provacy policies reguarding data on their drives stating that I had important finational information there (BS) anyways the rep told me that if the drive is mechanically defective meaning they cant refurb it they completely distroy the parts w/o attempting any data recovery. If it is refurbushable they then "write 0s" to the drive to make sure the next person does not get at any of your data , all with out looking at any of the contents of your drive.... thats what they told me at least....

"i dont see why anyone else (customs ?) would care about you bringing in a HD. "

I dont know about customs though.... I think they have to right to inspect any "suspicous" cargo you might be carrying I'm sure that includes HDDs even if its not ad-verbatim reguarding the law. I also think that if you dont give them a reason to look at your drive they will not confiscate it.... What do i know though I would ask a lawyer or someone familiar with international law and customs procedures.
