Looking at your pictures it dawned on me that pineapples are a giant bromeliad and that we might be able to grow one. The lack of freeze tolerance might be a problem but we could probably wrap it up during cold snaps.
My wife was talking with a neighbor yesterday and it turns out that the neighbor grows pineapples. So we can grow them! :)

Do they taste as good as they do when they grow them in Puerto Rico and Hawaii?

Excellent observation on your part!:) Most people don't realize that pineapples in fact do come from bromeliads.
So now that you know you can grow them in your area you should try it and see how it goes. From the sounds of it several members here grow their own so if you have any questions along the way maybe we can help.

Well here is the conclusion to this thread. The pineapple was ripe and ready to harvest yesterday so I chopped it off and brought it home. I will say considering the size of it and the long 2.5 year growth time it has to be the worlds most expensive pineapple. haha
Anyway, here it is in all its glory.

I was so excited to see this finally happen I just had to share it. 2.5 years ago my son wanted to do a science project on pineapples. Don't ask me why he just did so my parents found one and shipped it from Florida to Illinois. When we received it it was just a little thing that was way to small for a science project. Because I own a greenhouse of course it got pawned off on me to take care of this thing.
So a couple of days ago I was looking it over and tending to it when I noticed that it has started to bloom! The bloom is still very small right now but is growing fast and I imagine within a couple of weeks will start to have small pineapple on it. Here are a couple of pics I took today. It measures just around 28" high and a whopping 44" across! It's massive. lol

Here is a pic of the whole plant. The reason it is on a shopping cart is so I can move it easily without causing damage to it or my back.

And here is a pic of the bloom coming out of the top. Like I said it is small right now but growing very fast.

Gonna replant the top?
Maybe.....besides the top there were two pups in the pot that we transplanted and my wife took 5 unrooted cuttings from the mamma plant and stuck them in soil.
I honestly don't know how many more pineapples I really want to grow out to maturity.
Haha that's cool that it worked. Seems like a long process though, surprised these arn't more expensive than they are!
Commercially grow pineapple don't take this long to mature. Honestly I'm doubtful home grown pineapple take this long but it was my first so I took my time I guess.haha

Might be a cool little display in your shop. Probably not many up there have seen pineapples growing.

You're right it did grab the attention of a few people and they were impressed when they saw it but I really want to stay focused on my bananas and citrus. I've been growing out and propagating my bananas for close to 3 years and my lime, lemon, and orange trees for close to a year. I guess the pineapple just doesn't hold my attention like the others do.... IDK maybe I'll find time and space for them.
