2/7 update
well, it's been a long few months. my grandfather has been in the hospital this entire time :(

he's had surgeries, tests, physical rehab, and so many other things. recently he caught pneumonia and it slowed down his rehab. his physical state isn't good right now, and i'm beginning to realize that he may die soon. i realized that i don't have a black suit, and my sister said i should get one now rather than later.

we've been forced to move him to a nursing home now. the hospital says that they've done all they can and we agree that he's been in the hospital too long. his health is not good, so he needs 24 hour care. it's been such a difficult decision to make, because no one in my family wants him to be in a nursing home.

the situation has been taken its emotional toll on my entire family.

just wanted to say thanks to anyone who took the time to pray for my grandfather.

Original post

My grandfather is in the hospital right now. It seems he had a stroke (tests haven't come back yet, but all signs are pointing that way).

He's 85 years old and before this, he's been very active and full of energy. In the summer, he's always mowing my parent's yard and in the winter, he's shovelling snow. We always tell him not to, but we know that he loves to work with his hands and stay active. My family has always joked that he's stronger than anyone in our family.

Our family is pretty large, we all live in Michigan, and we are all very close. We haven't experienced a death in the family (besides great-grandparents in Korea), so this is all very scary and new to us. The past year, more than ever, I've been thinking about my grandparents' mortality. Since we haven't had a death in the family, I've really taken for granted that both my grandparents would always be there.

If you've read this far, please say a quick prayer for him. I know many here aren't Christian, so please just take a moment and hope for the best, for our family.

Thanks.

:(

Lifte him up. It's a blessing to be near him at this very critical time.

May the great physician provide you with a holiday miracle!

My grandfather sounds just like yours. He died 2 days ago, from severe brain trauma (was hit by a bike). If he had stepped off the sidewalk 1 second earlier OR later, he would have been fine. :(

Best of luck to him, and to you and the rest of your family. Hopefully, if it was a stroke, it wasn't that bad.

My grandfather died of a stroke when I was in the 8th grade.

Best of luck, I hope he makes it through it,

iamme - were they able to give him that 3 hour shot? (Helps stim the effects of a stroke like paralyzation)

I was JUST in the same boat as you - my grandfather had a stroke in the bathroom in September. My grandmother found him on the floor and called 911. They were not able to give him the 3 hour shot b/c they didn't know how long he had been passed out. His right side was paralyzed. Just when we thought he was getting better - he was going into rehab about 3 weeks after the incident - I think his lungs collapsed from pneumonia and he went into a coma/brain dead state. He woke up once before he passed on 2 months ago.

I hate to make it sound awful and terrible and horrible, but you might want to prepare yourself for the worst. I'm sorry and I hope your grandfather pulls through it, but just realize that life is a precious thing and sometimes there are things that are unavoidable.

no, everything seemed to come about so gradually that everyone was taken off guard. he said his arm was numb one day and it seemed to get a little better. then today, he suddenly loss feeling on his entire left side (arm and leg).

thanks for the encouraging words, everyone.

Damn I'm sorry to hear that :( He may get it back - there's some nerve damage associated with strokes. With rehab or whatnot or just naturally it could come back. I wish your grandfather a speedy recovery.
