*UPDATE: Got it to work* Max Payne 2- Only 32 bit color? No 16 bit? =>RANT

i just got the game. i have a 17" LCD and am on 1280x1024.

but it looks like max payne is only 32bit color. no option for 16 bit. i have a gf4 4200 64meg. to play 1280x1024x32bit, the game says i need 78meg of video memory. i tried it anyway, and i the game crashed.

1280x960x32bit doesnt work either. best i can do is 1280x768...ARRG

anyway i can get max payne 2 working at 1280x1024 on a 64meg video card?!

THX

EDIT:
finally got my gf4 4200 64megs working at 1280x1024x32bits on Max Payne2.

I had everything maxed, but had to go down to 2xQ AA instead of 4xS AA. Heck, even 4xAA and 3xAA didn't work because the game reported i needed more than 64megs of video memory at those settings. (And if i tried it, the game crashed.)

Anyway, according to FRAPS, i'm only getting 15-20 FPS at Chapter1 (warehouse). That's using 1280x1024x32bits 2xQ AA/8xAF and everything else maxed.

So a gf4 is NOT the way to go. it'll play today's games decently if u turn down some of the bells/whistles, but will be outdated next year (ie: HL2). You want a card that will play next year's games at a decent rate. Thus i would suggest the 9600np for $70 on Black Friday if u need it now. Else wait a week b4 HL2 comes out to upgrade your video card.

Wait til you finish it, then you'll be more pissed off at how short it is 😛 On DOA my time was liek 2 hours, 35 minutes :x

If you can dish out the cash for a low response time LCD, you can pay for a video card powerful enough to run @ native resolution. Otherwise you shouldn't have gotten an LCD.

So the game is squished vertically? Why don't you just play at 1024x768? Can the GF4 even handle the game any higher, regardless of memory?

I don't know, something doesn't seem right about that. Wouldn't 1280x1024 at 32bit color be 1280x1024x4(bytes per pixel)x2(double buffering) be 10485760 bytes, or a hair over 10MB for the frame buffer? I can't think of why it would want 78MB; try cranking down the settings or something.

Aren't the textures also stored in the video RAM? those might account for the rest of the 78 megs

Of course, but the game only requires 32MB of memory; not counting the frame buffer in the original 32MB, we still have 64-10=54MB of memory free, so at minimal settings, it should be in bounds, hence the suggestion to turn things down a bit.

True dat. a 128MB card won't help you much because it won't play that smoothly at that resolution on a GF4 Ti4200.

? lcds have different aspect ratio.

run at lower resolution textures perhaps?

i've noticed a few new games can't use 16 bit textures, they seem to run fine even on my lousy 9000pro so no biggie

finally got my gf4 4200 64megs working at 1280x1024x32bits on Max Payne2.

*smacks JEDI*

Well why didn't you tell us that you had AA on in the first place! AA requires a larger frame buffer, eating in to more memory; no wonder you couldn't get it to work.😛 Turn off AA and AF(you don't really need them, admit it), and MP2 should run smoothly at high quality at that resolution.

If you're sportin a GF, forget about the AA and just aim for the highest res you can get.

Or, get a Radeon...

/me huggles my new 9800 Pro

omg, he complains about performance issues and leaves aa on? omg... aa is a luxury.
