My wife got a call from her sister today about the Jeep Grand Cherokee stolen out of her driveway last month near Bellingham, Washington OP. The police in her town found it Sunday night. The officer who took her report the day it was stolen, the one who flirted with her, was on patrol and spotted a Cherokee that just didn't look right to him; the rims/tires were all mismatched, etc. So he checked the plates, and sure enough it was her car with the original plates. He turned on his lights to pull the guy over, and he took off. The cop chased him for about 20 minutes, the driver went everywhere; took out a barbed wire fence, just trying to get away. Finally he had to stop when he high-centered on railroad tracks. He got out and ran, but they caught him.

It's in impound until Friday. Not that she'd want it back as it is now, especially considering what the cop told her. He called back after talking to her earlier, and said he wanted to let her know that with the quick search they did last night, they found a number of used needles; the guy who had it is a meth user, and it appeared as though he was living in the car; it was filled with all kinds of garbage. He is not the one who stole it, he bought it from someone in Bellingham for $500, but he knew that it was stolen. In his backpack they found the car registration, her keys and alarm fob. Her address was also written in a couple of places (scary!). She said she felt like crying since it is just so wrecked. She sent a pic from her phone; keep in mind the color is supposed to be gold but looks grey due to the dirt and overcast sky.

She was going to go in and settle with the insurance company on Tuesday, but since it has been recovered does anyone know what might happen now?

Would the insurance company total it out then maybe try to fix and resell it?

I personally would not want the kids to ride in it with the needle thing, even if someone went over it with a fine tooth comb. Does she have to take it back?

never take the 1st offer unless its more than what you need to get the same car

I don't know ANYTHING about insurance, but i highly doubt they're going to give her a settlement now that the car has been recovered. If she's going to be uncomfortable in it, she'll probably have to sell it.

She has full coverage that includes vandalism. She said that there are a lot of scratchs from the barbed wire and dings along both sides. She kept it in immaculate condition, even the kids were not allowed to eat in it. We are thinking that the cost to restore it to its pre-theft condition would be more than having the insurance company give her the depreciated value and taking the car to sell themselves. Like totaling it.

I'd be very wary of sitting in that car. ANd unless this was disclosed in the reselling i would think it's rather irresponsible

Guys, I dunno. While it's awful that it happened, it sounds like mostly the car is just plain dirty.... what am I missing here? You think that 2 years from now little jonny is going to be playing in the backseat and stab himself with a used needle? Clean it!

But you can get iniviAids from them, which is undetectable by modern visible medical science.

I'm glad she got the chariot back. A few comments:

1) The meth head said he didn't steal it..... he bought it? Sure right. Trust me, he stole it.
2) A professional interior detail can do wonders for a dirty car.
3) Just make sure the mechanic who gives it the once-over for the insurance $$ gives it the COMPLETE once-over.

Happy motoring.

After leaving her keys in the ignition, in an unlocked car, with it running, I would be happy with whatever the insurance decides to offer her.

No offense... but as long as the car can be restored to the condition it was in before it was stolen, I see no reason she shouldn't have to take her own car back.

I think that all of the fenders and doors, plus front bumper, grill and hood would have to be replaced and the entire car would have to be repainted to satisfy her. I don't know if the roof was dented in the chase. Then there is the wheel and tire replacement and interior detailing. At least some of her personal stuff was still in the Jeep.

How much was the vehicle worth? And why do essentially all of the body panels have to be replaced? I doubt they'll total it, but who knows.

She describes it like a can that has been kicked down the road. You can wash it and try to buff out the scratches, but all of those little dents are still going to show.

That's right blame the victim, couldn't be the criminals fault.

Our insurance premiums aren't high because of this, it is because of the people who don't pay attention when driving, drive under the influence and stuff like that..

I live in Des Moines, WA and my best friend lives in Bellevue. It really isn't a place where you would expect for that to happen...

In the State of Washington, if your car is stolen then recovered, they give it a Salvage title..

If your sister ends up getting a new car, Insurance will auction off this car.. I'll probably see it when I go to Auto Auctions.. I'm there almost everytime it is open...

Well from the picture it just looks like a dirty jeep. If there really is that much minor damage, you may be correct in that it could still be totalled...

If a guy walked through Harlem wearing a KKK hood, would you feel sorry for him when he gets beat up? She irresponsibly left herself wide open to having her truck stolen, don't expect people to be sympathetic. The fact that she doesn't want it anymore even though it's been recovered will only make people less sympathetic.

How much is the vehicle worth? ~$10k? And what percentage of that must the repairs cost for it to be totalled? With my insurance company it's 75%. They can probably repair more than you think, particularly the side body panels. One of our cars was recently in an accident where it was crushed between a commercial van and a full-size pickup truck. The damage was ~$13,000. It looked a lot worse than that truck, but you never know with car repairs. If they have to replace just about every body panel like you say, maybe it will be totalled.

Those are two completely different things. What you described is ?inflammatory speech? which is not protected by the First Amendment and IS a crime if it incites a riot or causes physical harm (like yelling ?fire? in a crowded theater). What happened to my wife?s little Sis was someone trespassed on her property and stole her car, both crimes. Her town does not have a law prohibiting leaving your vehicle running on your property, so she did not commit a crime.

Looks like she is getting screwed anyway. Her insurance company towed it to their lot and says that they will clean it up and give it back to her. She went through the interior with the adjuster today and found about half of her CDs, some of the robbers CDs in the visor pouch, someone else?s credit card in the center console (which she turned over to the police), lots of fast food wrappers, plus a clean, empty sardine can with a lighter in the back.

QTF! Is that used for cooking meth? Was the jerk off they found driving it making drugs in her car. She said the interior smelled like Polo cologne. I never liked Polo because it reminded me of a hamster cage that hadn?t been cleaned in two weeks, cedar shavings and urea. Polo could have been used to cover the ammonia smell.

The exterior was not as dented as she thought, but the paint is all ?scratched to hell?. Mr. Insurance adjuster was walking around the Jeep with her pointing at the gouges saying ?That ?ill buff right out?.

Insurance won?t pay for any of her personal property including 80+ CD?s, her expensive sunglasses, and get this they won?t pay for the broken bug shield that was on it when she bought it used because they say it is an after factory add on. My wife didn?t ask about the wheels and tires. Her Sis says if she has to take it back that she will sell it. More updates to come.

If I left $100,000k in an open briefcase on my front lawn, would you have any sympathy for me if I complained about it being stolen?

I wonder if she learned her lesson about leaving her car running with the keys in it.

In Ontario Canada - it's up to YOU how it gets fixed...

You get to choose the body shop (even if they have a higher quote) everything... tell them you wont accept the car until it's in the same condition it was when it was stolen... even washed and waxed... it'll get done.

That's what insurance is for... you should not have to put yourself out because someone stole your car... you pay them enough money per month that they better fix whatever problem it has...

Also have the car checked over by a mechanic... if they were driving the hell out of it there could be many things busted...
