Update: Fixed. So what I did is

1. mast clear under 2.1
2. root and unlock
3. install cognition 4.4.1
4. insert T-mo sim card to test, full signal strength, no problem
5. insert AT&T sim card, signal strength fluctuated for two mintutes, then full bars.
6. add an APN, disable the AT&T 310 410 APN.
7. Restart twice, everything is back to normal.

I googled and there seemed to be no definite solution. I wish someone here can help.

Symptom:

Captivate with stock firmware 2.1 (or 2.2), clean reset, no unlock. The AT&T signal strength changed from -50 to no service in a few minutes after powred-on. Checked filght mode is off. The battery level dropped like 1% every five minutes searching the network. Sometimes could make one call then no more signal. Restart the phone, get the signal for one minute, then no service again.

The same sim card is working well on other HTC android phone. The signal is very strong on other phones because there is a cell tower 10 blocks away.

Is it a hardware failure? Any possible settings?

Thanks.

My samsung vibrant did that last week. I freaked out! I kept rebooting and pulling the battery like 10 times then it finally worked. I still have no clue why it happened.

Could be hardware. I'd try flashing a custom rom on top of it. I'm using Cognition on my Captivate but I heard Serendipity is also good as well. If it doesn't work under those roms then I would suspect that it's hardware.

If those roms do not work, can I use odin3 to go back to stock rom?

had the same thing happen to my captivate. Eventually it just went away, never figured out what caused it. If I were you I'd flash back to stock and then flash to a custom rom like serendipity.

Make sure your at 100% when you flash.

Also, try recalibrating your battery by charging it up to 100 percent, and then keep unplugging and charging back to 100 percent for like an hour, sometimes turning it off to do this. This helps a lot with shitty battery life.
