OK, I have pretty good evidence that my HD is running at ATA66.

My SiSoft Sandra 2001se benchmark shows my HD at 17476 which is just slightly ahead of the reference ATA66 7200RPM HD and well, well below the reference ATA100 7200RPM HD.

I tried to run that Maxtor UDMA utility again, this time switching my HD from the Promise controller channel to the Primary Master IDE channel. Still, the utility failed to recognize my HD!! What's going on? Anyone experience this?

Is this an ASUS A7V133 issue, VIA/Win2K issue, or a defective HD issue?

Thanks to whoever can help.

If the drive is defective it definitely wouldnt run at all. If its running ATA66, then its just the settings and configuration. Do you have the most recent BIOS and 4in1 drivers? And did you install the Microsoft ATA100 hotfix?

That seems like a reasonable score if your hard drive is fragmented. I used to get that score when my Maxtor 7200rpm drive was fragmented. I use Norton Speed Disk and it went up to 19 000 - 20 000

It isnt the drives' problem. Anyway running it in ATA100 wont give you much more scores in Sandra.

I think Sandra is sometimes weird. Sometimes I get ~23000 running it. Sometimes i get ~17000. Just weird. IBM 75GXP.

The difference between ata 66 and ata100 is next to nothing. You should also run another software called HDtach to see the burst rate of the HD. It is a nice program. Here's the link to the site
