So I get a call from my dad today, telling me that his comcast internet has been cut off. Comcast is claiming that him and my mom downloaded 320GB of data during the month of February. They are on wireless, but I have them on a WPA network with MAC filtering. My dad's computer has an 80GB hard drive, and my mom certainly doesn't know how to use torrents or anything like that. What could be happening that would cause this to happen?

UPDATE 4/14: Today I tried to get online around 4pm EST, and I got nothing. Also, today my dad got a bill and he was being charged for two modems. So here is what happened. My dad called comcast and told them he only has one modem, and they deleted from his account the second modem, which just so happened to be my modem that was on his account 3 years ago. I called comcast this afternoon and tried to get my modem put on my account, and it would not work because it was still linked to my dads account, but didn't show up on the account. So now I have to wait 48 hours until omebody from 2.5 tier can look at my problem. So that's the answer. My modem was linked to my dad's account but not registered on it.

Someone could be spoofing that MAC address? Interesting, let us know what it turns out to be.

wireless MAC filtering doesn't do anything, WPA w/o a PSK is all you can do, look at the logs on the router should tell you if someone connected who shouldn't be there.

Remove your security and mac filtering and tell them you had an open wireless network. Unless you already told them you had a secure network, then you just screwed yourself.

I have WPA with PSK using TKIP. No one around them would know how to spoof the MAC address or have a need to. For somwone to be WARdriving is insane, think how long you'd have to sit outside someone's house downloading to reach 320GB

maybe someone cracked the security? Doesnt seem like a worthwhile target though just to dl 320gb

they'd still have to beat the WPA.

doesn't sound like torrents. you'd have to be getting 10 GB a day or about 120 KB/sec all day. i think that'd be hard to sustain.

I would check the router logs, it is likely that someone spoofed the mac. It is surprising that someone would go to those lengths just to leech bandwidth. My experiences is that there is always a free network open when you need one.

the router can tell you how many computer are/were connected. don't use Wi-Fi if you can without PSK and the strongest means of security. MAC filtering is esaily bypassed. install a packet sniffer and find the MAC address in the packets. then spoof it. easy.

Filtering does a lot. So does WPA w/o PSK. Even if someone was wardriving, I don't see how they could get that good signal. You're not going to get 320gb that quickly.

Comcast limite your download? I didn't know that. I was thinking switching over to them since my dsl is only 1.5mps/384kps and costs ~$70. Not to said I ever download that much in a given month, but why limite yourselves.

I downloaded that much just reading this thread. Does Dad listen to radio online or streaming video? 320GB is the total download, not just what he saved to his hard drive.

you say they have an 80GB HD... well streaming video results bandwidth/download usage but does not result in file storage on the computer.
