So I just accepted a job in Kansas City, MO and am interested in learning more about the fun places and things to do in the area. Right now I am looking to live downtown (near the river market). I have been to the Plaza area and that was a lot of fun.

Any recommendations?

EDIT 5/2/2007:

well i made it and am all moved into my apartment in north kansas city. i took my parents on a drive through the areas i knew (downtown, midtown, plaza) and they were really impressed. i start work on the 14th so ive got a while to get settled in. we went to jack stack bbq on our first night here and that was pretty good. fast and good service, decent food. i met someone last night and we went to pf changs (her choice, not mine) but it was really nice to meet someone already here.

this is a great city and i am very impressed so far. i will have to slowly work through everyones suggestions of where to eat. if anyone is up for a small ATOT get-together this weekend, i would be all for that

not any time soon, they sort of tried to get the penguins to come in , but i think it was just a trick to get pittsburg to give them a new free areana

If you're into bars and such, plaza's decent, i'd rather go to westport which is just north of plaza. Has more bars and a better crowd I think. For clubs, River Market has SkyBox, Empire Room is decent. NV is good, it's near River Market as well.

Well, I hope you're not working for sprint, if so, dont get settled too much.

Anyhow, for the younger crowd, I'd recommend the plaza, westport and the legends. Westport is a good time to just go out, get sh!tfaced, hit on women etc. Plaza is more upscale and you probably will have to wear nicer attire here than anywhere else. The legends is the place by the speedway. There are quite a few restaraunts and bars and is not as dressy as the plaza.

As far as my favorite bar, The Peanut off of 76th and metcalf. It's pretty much a sh!thole, but I love it. . .$1 beers on Friday.

So, some places to go check out:

GoJo's or Hibachi Japanese steakhouses
Baja 600 (Plaza)
Cheesecake factory (meh, not all that great)
Arthur Bryants (Best BBQ I've ever had anywhere. Anyone that says they've had better are lying a$$holes.)
Oklahoma Joe's BBQ (2nd best bbq ever, dont let the being in a gas station thing fool you, this is top notch bbq)

Oh, and I forgot another place to check out. Crown center. Kind of upscale mall, but not really. I've only been there to ice skate and never to shop. Blah, also Royals games = fun and there are always shows at the various venues around town (Kemper, uptown etc). The sprint center area is gonna be sweet once it's completed.

okay, enough rambling eh?

The River Market area is pretty fun and is pretty lively at night, but the majority of downtown is pretty dead after 7 or 8 o'clock. Like other people have said the Westport area and the Plaza are pretty lively. What type of stuff are you into?

They made a hella good offer to the penguins (free use of the arena), but Pittsburgh stepped up and kept 'em here. :p

Welcome to KC!

I live in Gardner, but work in the city. You should come shooting sometime :D

But seriously, its hard to say where you should live. As you may know, the Plaza area and some of downtown is quite expensive. Not only that but as with any downtown area your 5 minutes from ghetto.

Check out Union Station in midtown. Its a cool place. Westport is great for some weekend bar action, but I get tired of the cover charges. Oak Park Mall is probably the best mall in the area on 95th and Quivera. They have a pretty cool strip mall called The Legends out by the race track and Cabelas. All kinds of good stuff out there. They also put up a "new Plaza" up north but the tax rate is obscene (like 12% or so). My personal favorite place to eat is J Alexanders on 110th and Metcelf. Great steaks. Theres also a Best Buy right across the street. If you like thia food you have to try out The Thai Place on 87th. For mexican hit up Ponaks downtown. Couldnt tell you the address but could drive you there with my eyes closed.

oh, and do most bars have cover charges there? here in madison no one has covers unless there is a band, and even then rarely.

Also check out the New York Deli (7016 Troost). The best Reuben sandwich in the midwest, and a great bakery. Also, the address for Ponak's Mexican Kitchen is 2856 Southwest Blvd.

edit: I also had a weakness for the Italian Stallion at Frick & Frac (39th & Gennessee in Westport, near state line).

I'm moving to Lenexa at the end of this month. I've already tried to look up good food places :p

Found a place called "Shogun." I'll give it a shot and report back.
