Holy mutha, 800 bucks for a CPU/Mobo/LCD? If I was so inclined, I'd buy a Dell 2001FP + mobile barton/NFII infinity ultra... that might cost you more than 800 though :) (like around 1000 i'm thinking).

Btw, I don't get ppl's obsessions with LCDs, they are flat sure, but if you got space, I'd rather get a cheaper and better (picture quality) CRT. That would cut prices down alot, and will give you the option of adopting socket 939 Athlon 64s :).

Is that ram pc3200? If so, I'd recommend an A64 rig, 3000+ and an NF3 board should cost less then 400$, then use the rest on a quality 17 inch lcd, samsung, NEC, Dell, etc. Tom's has good comparisons of lcd's for gaming use.

Twista:

Only the Athlon 64 FX requires registered memory. Regular Athlon 64 uses plain Jane DDR.

You've never seen a 2001FP have you?

I'd think seriously on cutting back to an xp2500+ and going for one of the new graphics boards is I had $800 and all that. The graphics board would double the gaming performance. The 64-3200 ???? I'm not sure that much in comparison (over a 2500 XP)

Why have 1.5 Gb of RAM? Your game is not going to be faster, 1 Gb is more than enough. Why not just buy a good case with good power suppy instead of buying separate power supply? I think that is a waste of money.

Actually what you said is pretty wrong about the ram. For planetside even 1gb of ram is sucked up and i think the same for bf1942 and other newer games. He wants the same case as me so he gets what he wants.

Well, I would have built this system completely differently. I would have gone with a Mobile Athlon XP, and with the money saved I would have bought an ATi X800PRO. 1GB of ram is plenty BTW.

<EDIT: No graphics card!? Also, you can run dual channel with 3 sticks of ram, but only 2 of the 3 will be in dual channel mode.>

He already has a new vid card, which is his new 9800 pro. Do the mobile cpus work in desktop motherboards? Ever play PLANETSIDE.. 1gb is not enough.. 1.5gb is enough for planetside. If you havent played it well.. theres abunch of players.. oo planetside.com

Yes the mobile CPUs work in desktop boards. Don't get me wrong, the A64 is the superior chip by a fair margin. I only suggested it as a means of getting the X800PRO which will effectively double your gaming performance in most situations compared to the 9800PRO.

As for that game, interesting, 1.5GB of RAM is a ton. Honestly, in your position, why not just go all out and get 2 1GB sticks? I'm not sure how expensive it would be, but at least you would have an upgrade path for your memory that way.

If he is a smart friend he would sell the 9800XT now and buy an X800XT. If he's lucky the swap will only cost him $100. :)

Well, your combo looks good, except I would save the $150 and go with the 2800+ A64 CPU. Since he has a videocard already I suppose the A64 will be fine. You chose my favorite A64 motherboard, so that should be a good choice. You should really look into 1GB DIMMs, as I know they do in fact exist. Aside from that, maybe get a 74GB WD Raptor HD with the money you'll save on the slower CPU.

Prescots cost the same and run the same as the c processors so why not he won't be overclocking so heat is not a problem. If you were going to get a a64 comp something to keep in mind is at ddr400 you can only use two of the slots that's where the 1gig dimms would come in. Also socket 754 boards can't run dual channel no matter what nor does it really affect preformance of a64 chips (compare fx-51 with 3400+)
