Main uses for the work PC are

programing (c, C++, Java)
Running multiple CAD programs

JBuilder is slow as hell on my machine and CAD programs just bring my machine down to a crawl.


In return for me getting the laptop I will have to commute to our HQ an hour from our office for 3 weeks or so.


Current Machine: Athlon 1.1 almost 4 years old and 512MB memory...

Update new Machine is:- Dell M60 with 1 gig of ram and P4(not sure of speed on this this but it will be mobile CPU)

 
Define kickass.

I'm using a P4 M 3.2 HT + 1 GB, 7200 RPM HD, & SXGA+ display. I love it. Haven't even bothered to setup my desktop at home since I moved here.

Enjoy. I just got a Inspiron 9100 with 512Mb, 60GB, 9700 Pro. Such a beast. It's a lil heavy but I can live with it.
 
kickass would mean not desktop replacement (so fairly light and not hot as hell) I am thinking P4 2.4M(at minimum)
 
I'm a developer and I'm still running on an A21m thinkpad. 800MHz and 384MB memory baby!

Should be getting my T41 in a few weeks.
 
lucky you!! Ive been using a Pentium 200 with 196 megs of ram. My upgrade will be a 500mhz pentium with 512megs of ram. This is because i spec'd out a 6000$ laptop for my boss - 1.7 dothan, 2GB ram, 60GB 7200 rpm, 1900x1200 resolution on 15.4" screen etc. BTW, company only had to pay 3500$.

Sounds a little high for that system.. maybe you should shop around. There are 2.0Ghz Dothan chips 2mb cache 400mhz fsb now. Any system like this I speced out was ~$3000
 
I don't have the specs or system yet will let you guys know sometime next week. It was shameful when meeting with clients with just a notebook and pen.

haha my co-workers are going to be so jealous 🙂

In return? Why would you have to do anything in return for your company to provide you with a required piece of equipment?

Laptop is never a requirement for a developer 😉.
