Update:
Bought one. Was the last one they had in store. Have lots of fun playing with it. Now the big question: What Apps do I need???

Less a phone, more of a remote control. Freaking HUGE.

I am really torn now with what I will pick up. I need a pretty decently powered smartphone for my rotations. I was just going to go with the Original Droid, but now with the Droid X on the horizon I am starting to think about getting it. Also I keep hearing about new phones coming out with the Android system.

My school gives us $300 bucks to buy a PDA or smartphone. Since it is basically a tuition refund I want to spend it all, so since I have it, I almost want to get the X. I need it soon though, and the only verizon store near me only has 3 still available for presale.

Oh decisions, decisions...

You should get an iPhone and then sell it.

Well Firstly, Fuck AT&T. I'd want to be able to actually use the phone.

Secondly, what would be the point? Could I somehow sell it for more than I paid? I doubt it.

The iphone 4s are going on ebay right now anywhere from 700-900 bucks depending on capacity and such. Still probably more of a PITA than it's worth.

Anyway, have you used ATT long enough to say 'fuck it' or are you just following the masses and media bullshit with your 'oh I think it sucks too cuz they all say it does'. I personally have used ATT and Verizon and went back to ATT because they have the same good reception in my area for cheaper than Verizon. The hate is pretty overblown IMO

Damn OP where did you play with one, I called my local stores and none of them have demo units.

The girl working there had one. She said she wasn't technically allowed to show anyone but a little smooth talking and I got her to whip it out of her purse. She also gave me her card in case I have any "extra questions", so I must have been spitting game.

The hospital I am working at has had a mass AT&T exodus. Every 4th year I talked to has switched over as well as most of the doc's.

What about the Incredible or EVO? Droid 2 is supposedly on the way soon as well.

I'll keep my Droid, it's plenty fast and with Froyo (2.2) should be even smoother.

I'll be in line buying the Droid 2 or Droid 3... whichever one has the dual core processor with amazing battery life.

I have yet to hear one good thing about the incredible when compared to the original droid.
Then who do you listen to? Couple of my friends and coworkers have the Droid, and I have the incredible. All of them agree that the only thing the Droid does better is battery life or if you have to have a physical keyboard.

Why would you get the old (Droid) when the new one is out? Regardless of how similar they are today, the newer model is going to be supported for longer. The X falls into your price range, so I don't see any possible reason to not get it.

Unless you are looking to root it. Then the Droid already has a large hacking community dedicated to it. But then again the X should have the same kind of following soon.

In short...ignore the above bickering and just get the better phone.

Yes, I would get the X if I could.

Just wait. In a little bit VZW will have the Incredible, Droid2, DroidX, and Samsung Galaxy (I forget the name of the vzw version). Once they're all out, read the in-depth reviews and play with them in-store, and then make your decision. It would be pretty foolish to buy one right now, unless you really want the huge screen.

Plus points in favor of the original Droid:
That sucker has been flipped turned upside down every which way. Mine is rooted, with a new rom, kernel, theme, and radio baseband. Finally happy with it for this week ;) It's overclocked to 1.1GHz and flieeeees. Droid X might take a while to get there--the bootloader is encrypted and someone will need a way to get past there if you are looking for custom roms etc. The Droid 2 should be releasing in August as well.

Then again if you are looking for an out of the box phone that won't want to tinker with and just have it work, I would go for the newer Droid X, or the Droid 2 if you want a hardware keyboard.

This is good advice. I would just buy yourself a $300 Verizon gift card and wait until you have a chance to play with a phone, then make your decision and jump when you're ready. No sense in rushing to grab something with your school check just because its available...

I've been going back and forth. I gave up me second Verizon line (wife still uese the first) a couple of years ago when they handed out Verizon phones at work. I transfer jobs and they give us these Casio phones that are tough but junk.

Verizon wants $199 to add the Incredible now or I can wait till December when our contract is up and see what available. I'll probably wait.

For some reason, the design of the HD2 kind of ruin it for me with other phones.
The Droid X has the best specs right now but the big bezel at the bottom and the hump just rub me the wrong way.
Most people don't care but it absolutely drives me nuts.

Face the facts. AT&T f**king blows. It isn't overblown. They are dead last in dropped calls by a large margin. I switched four family members to Verizon in the last month alone.
