*UPDATE* Best Bang-4-Buck 480w PS

I'm sure thats more than enough the Nvidia statement was directed at low end crappy PSU's anyways. I don't know if you have seen that power usage picture floating but it shows the 6800U only uses about 20 more watts than the 5950U

From what I have heard the TT's are great though very quiet aswell.

Yes, but I'm not taking any chances (this time) - $60 isn't that much IF it is a good 480w PS and not that much cheaper than a quality Antec 350w.

EDIT: My finger is hovering over the "order" button right now . . . anything better for less $$ ?

I REALLY need a new PS anyway - the one that came with my Aspire (350w Turbolink) will power off if my monitor is turned on before the computer. 😛

That is one of the ones I have been looking at I have a Vantech stealth 470 watt damn right under what I need for a new NV card 😉 My PSU has beeen great but the noise the thing makes in ridiculous it is known as one of the noisest out there 🙁

I would grab that PSU if you have the money that is pretty inexpensive for a quality PSU and according the the ANandtech reviews it is great.

Check out "Enlight" before you buy they make all TT's PSU's it might be a little cheaper from them.

Thank-you for your quick replies . . . yes, I have the money - that is why i was asking now. 😉

It is ORDERED now. IF I get any other concrete suggestions, I can still cancel. I am figuring with free shipping (and a free t-shirt) it isn't a bad deal for 480w for $60.

Are there enough connecters for the 6800Ultra? They require 2 separate ones.

I think you should take a look at the Enermax line of PSU's. Very high 12V (26-33A) which is what the video card needs.

Or you could order the card, try it with your old PSU and only upgrade the latter if you have issues.

Uh, no . . . i am quite certain the 350w Turbolink that came with my (on sale) Aspire is part of what's been holding back my 2.80c's O/C . . . in fact, if I power on the computer with my monitor on, it will fail boot-up . . . 😛

I was planning to UPgrade ANYway . . . the 6800U is just giving me the 'excuse' I need. 😉
(or something like that)

This new forum "upgrade" won't let me edit at wil . . . anyway . . .

The Enermax' PS at NewEgg are EXpenSIve . . . 😛

Let me try again . . . IS there a BETTER bang-4-buck 480w PS than the Thermaltake for $60 shipped (remember, it's only for stability and to run a 6800ultra . . . not a lot of drives in my case.

cheeezzzz...wait for R420 for god's sake...uhh..what am i saying ? I'd probably get a NV40 too if i had the money 🙂

(Argh..i hate this blue background.....)

Thanks!

It is ordered. Just one of the 'small details' I don't have to think about anymore (and i can rule-out my current PS as the reason my 2.80 has trouble over 3.3Ghz -or not) - I may not even get the 6800u (there is the miniscule chance that ATI may actually have the better performing GPU next month or I may even decide to get a cheap 9800xt) . . .

. . . .however, the tendency is now for rigs to be more and more power-hungry and I bet within a few years 480+ watts will be commonplace in desktops.

EDIT: Why wait for r420?
(it's gonna need a bigger and more quality PS also) 😉

Mine is teh Suck PS. 😛

I really do need a better PS and $60 is not UNreasonable for a quality 350w let alone a 480w - I am just "future-proofing". 😉

So are you suggesting i get a smaller PS?

😛

edit: I think you'd be NUTz to run a 110w videocard on a 200w PS for an EXtenDEd length of time (that guy is ASKing for TRouble). 😉

I want to save money but an underpowered PS can be disaster for some components. 😉

And how much do you think i can save by going with a smaller supply? Maybe $20? . . . just not worth it for peace of mind (and remember, my CURRENT ps just is NOT CUTting it.

btw, i think nVidia must know something about their own recommendations . . . perhaps they are allowing 25% leeway for 'packed' high-end rigs and generic PSes (who is gonna run a $500 video card in an expensive computer with a crap PS?). . . my guess is that you'd still need at least 400w of a 'quality' ps for most rigs with a 6800u.

Apoppin, you should cancel your order. That Thermaltake only has 18A of 12v power, and both the video card and the P4's use more 12v power when they are overclocked. Since it's got 40A on the 5v rail, it would be nice for an Athlon-based system, but not for a P4-based system. This 460 watt Enermax has almost twice as much power on the 12v rail, and only costs $19 more: link.

Well my o/c'd 2.80 is absolutely stable @ 3.31Ghz at default . . . . i only get into trouble when i try to go higher (and it seems like a PS "issue".

I am only running a 350w generic .. . the thermaltke has 130w more headroom to push the 6800u AND (possibly) o/c my P4 further.

No, I am suggesting you don't waste your money, because of overly conservative IHV "recommendation". Get a card first.

Leon
Well, since i NEED a more stable PS (now), what am i really gonna save by going with a "lesser" unit (off $60) . . . maybe $20? . . . naw, the "insurance" is worth it (to me).

What bullshit

You are nothing but an Nvidia FANBOY

Nonsense. 😛

I own ATI currently and have always had ati in my rig since the Rage chipset (with only ONE brief period with a GeForce 256) . . .

. . . it's just that nVidia did nV40 right and we have to wait a LONG time for r500. 😉

How sure are you that you're going to be getting any more power at all, by saving the $19 difference between the TT and the Enermax? I had a 350 watt generic psu that had 20A on the 12v rail. That's why generic psu's aren't nearly as bad for overclocking P4's as they are for overclocking Athlons, since no generic psu has ever had the kind of 5v power that's required for them. You may actually be downgrading your 12v output, by buying that 480 watt TT. You know, it's still not too late to cancel your order. You'd still get the free T-shirt, I think.😀

Here's some comparisons from Anand's review (TT420) Does anyone (else) think the Thermaltake might not be enough?.

Yeah I personally think its crap that the 6800U takes TWO friggin molex connectors Looks like the SFF community is gonna be in an uproar
