:Update: Bad things confirmed. ASUS GPU RMA started, heard bad things.

Not related to this thread per se, but dealing mostly with the mindset. ASUS just released a new system (YouTube channel)...and in the video JJ said opening the case voided the warranty.

I thought ASUS liked to cater to enthusiast? Adding memory or upgrading to a new gpu voids the warranty? What gives with that?

Has ASUS had a change in management recently?

Seems like MSI really is the only one without a horrid customer service base.

There's horror stories with every one of these companies. Personally, I went with MSI *once* and I'll never buy another card from them again. I bought a Radeon HD 7950 HAWX and it literally fried itself within a week. RMAed it and the second one they sent me behaved erratically, didnt properly sleep, and didnt always come back from sleep. You could watch it power itself off and on for no reason when the computer was idle. And yes, I tested with three known good power supplies and two different known good systems to make sure it was the card.

Returned that one and bought a Gigabyte 7970, going strong over three years later with no issues.

Small update; I shipped my RMA back to ASUS using their cross shipping label on the 23rd, and I was told that day that the 770 would be shipped to me using overnight shipping. It's now the 29th, does anyone want to guess if I have a card yet?

Oh, that must be it! Silly me, I should have assumed there was a logical explanation, before jumping to the conclusion that ASUS mucked things up again.

:Edit: After a couple emails this morning, the card has shipped. The delay was due to "processing", that "coincidentally" completed the moment I contacted them about the delay.

I posted this back in January "As for Asus the last place I worked for gave up on them. We used to buy motherboards every two years and the failures increased every year and gosh help you if you have to use their RMA department.

I personally have used Asus, Gigabyte, Intel, AsRock, MSI, Biostar so I have no loyalty I just look for the best board for my money. Asus is a great board but like I said if you get a bad one in the US you have a heck of a wait to get it fixed and 80% of the times we got them back and they were never touched and had the same problems 5 weeks+ after we sent them in."

We used to order 25 to 30 MB's and 10 to 15 video cards every two years and I lost a lot of hair! Only way I will ever buy Asus again is if it's so cheap I can through it out if it goes to heck.

No, they EXCLUSIVELY made their cards for about a year. Prior to that they made their own and allowed others to do so as well.

The 770 arrived this morning, another bent card; I honestly don't know how this happens. It seems to work fine, but who knows for how long, it was a struggle getting it to mount properly in my case. Part of me wants to keep it just to end this nonsense, but I don't think I'll be able to, will just be expecting it's death every time I play a game.

It's in my PC now, bent it back for the most part to make it fit. This one had a curve going the entire length of the back plate, nothing as extreme as the 3rd RMA, and is in decent condition otherwise.

My gut feeling would be to cut your losses.

Use the card and if it does go bad buy something else from another vendor and never purchase from ASUS again.

At some point the time and aggravation is probably not worth it.

I agree. I am however, very stubborn and principled, so I'm finding it hard to accept this thing as is. I contacted them yet again, so for better or worse, I'm going to at least hear what they say.

Being bent back and forth may prove to do no harm to the card in the long run anyway, but knowing this was personally vetted by a senior tech to give to a customer who's been jerked around for 4 months is just ridiculous. All these adjectives are really starting to lose their meaning for me though.

I would just sell it for $160-170 and mention it was from RMA. Many people with a 770 would love a cheap 2nd 770 for SLI. Then just pick up the MSI Gaming 290 for $210. This would be a good cheapest upgrade for you!

I don't know if people would be too interested in a 770 that's bent like this, even if it is stable.

The rep that finally convinced me to take the 770 ended that email with this.

This would finally mean some quality control outside of the Indiana facility, as the reps are in California. Since this card works, It would just be a simple swap when it arrives if they will do another advanced RMA. Then I'd be more comfortable keeping or selling it.

Sounds good. Sell the new 770 though because 2GB is not good enough for future games and with prices on 290 so low, you would get 25% more performance and double the VRAM plus new 2-3 year warranty if you MSI for instance.

You should still RMA it. Here is why:

1. If your 770 dies, you'll need to spend $250+ out of pocket for a new card such as 290/970.
2. Once you get an RMAed 770, test it and if it works well, sell it immediately. As I said, there will probably be users interested in 770 level of performance for $160-170 or to SLI one.

So you don't have to be out of a card for all this time, just grab an R9 290 Tri-X with 4 free games for $250. Sell the games if you want and you just got yourself a very cheap upgrade as it should be relatively easy to sell a 770 from the RMA for $160-170. With this option, you get 2 years of warranty with the Tri-X but with your RMAed 770 you are also back to no warranty.

Essentially, the small cost to upgrade gives you 2 year warranty, more performance, double the VRAM. If you play a lot of TWIMTBP and Blizzard titles, it might be worth it to get a 970 (esp. for Unity and FC4).

Although I'd love a GTX970 it's far more than what I would like to spend. I got this GTX770 for like $230 and I can see it lasting me another 4-5 years until I really need to upgrade my CPU.

I'll try to submit a request to ASUS and see what they say.

Black screen of death as in sound, no video forced reboot? If so google wow black screen of death for issue. Daughters BF had issue with AMD card which turned out to be corrupt files in WOW. Don't remember which ones but renaming 3 folders fixed it. Of course it reset all his add ons, etc.

It was black at the beginning and now sometimes it's an army green. Sound does that lock and stutter.

It was bad like 2 months ago, it went away for about a month, and the other night it happened 3 times in a row but none after. It really is completely random.

I googled it once and some guy said he RMAed his card but I couldn't find anything else. Ill search again though if it saves me the headache.

Try this when you RMA. Lots of success stories. I'll be trying it if my RMA sends back a failed card.

Imma try to do a full re-install of WoW. I was putting it off since the download is so huge but whatever. If it saves me the RMA from hell it'll be worth it.

Reinstalled WoW with a fresh download.

Did a driver clean of my sound card drivers and my video card drivers and put in the latest.

Ran FurMark for about 5 hours with no issues.

I'll report back about WoW.

Sending in my RMA today. Wish me luck. I also just looked back at my original purchase and it looks like I bought it with my Amex. If they decide to screw me over, I will go the Amex claims route.
