UPDATE: anyone ever accepted a job, then during their 2 weeks accept a different one?

EDIT 5/10/12

so i have received an offer from the company C after killing the interview. the actual offer is exactly what company A offered me. however, the benefits and the work totally outweighs what i would be doing at company C. it's all new technology that is pretty much cutting edge, and stuff i don't know yet so i will learn a TON. there are a ton of other great benefits that totally outmatch company A as well.

only downside is they don't know 100% when i can start, and they won't know for 2 weeks when my start date will be. so i have a contingent offer that i have to let them know by monday, longer if i want. i'm having my recruiter find out if there is anyway i can get a little more $$ out of them, but i'm letting him handle that asking it at their own pace. if i don't hear anything back in that regards, i'm going to just accept it as is. the reason the recruiter is asking about more money is because he said usually their offers will outdo other offers, and he's telling them i already have an offer of that exact number, and that maybe giving a little bit more $$ in the offer will push me to accept quicker.

either way i would work there for the offer they made me, however who wouldn't want more money?

what i'm not looking forward to is calling company A and telling them sorry i'm going to have to pass on their offer, even though i've already accepted it. my background investigation still hasn't gone through yet, so i haven't given my 2 weeks at my current job either.

i'm also 100% positive my current job is going to counter offer and basically ask me what it would take to get me to stay. i am one of the extremely key people. but at the rate i'm at and the work at my current job and the current condition of the project, as well as the people i work with, i don't think anything would get me to stay.

so the next few weeks are going to be interesting for me.

ORIGINAL POST BELOW

i'm kind of in a pickle right now... this is a long post too...

im job hunting right now and had a phone interview last tuesday with company A, and then later a face-to-face with company B later on that afternoon. on the way home from the face-to-face, company A made me an offer. i told them that i just got out of a face to face with company B and wanted to wait what they had to say. they told me they could let me have until friday to decide.

during the week i renegotiated the offer with company A to get $5k more and 1 more week of vacation, and they were now giving me until this past monday to decide. turns out, they passed on me for certain reasons.

it really sucks too because company B seemed REALLY awesome to work for. i would be learning a lot of new technology, own laptop t work from home sometimes, can't work more than 40 hours a week, 100% company paid insurance premiums, and some other nice things. only downside is the commute is like 30 miles, but its all highway opposite of traffic.

company A has some benefits too, but it's not my ideal spot. and i have A LOT of skills that will translate perfectly, specifically biometrics development experience. i'd basically be doing the same technology i'm using at my current job and not really learning much new. it's a $10k pay raise, too. it's also like a 10 minute commute, and they have 9 hour work days and get every other friday off. so it's definitely still a good opportunity.

HOWEVER ... i did not find out company B was passing on me until yesterday at like 3pm. and PRIOR to that, i received a call from company C - a company that i did a phone screen with over a week ago. company C is very similar to company B in the technologies they use. very similar culture as well.

now i did NOT return the offer letter to company A yesterday. company C wants to interview me, but they can't do it until next monday. company A also told me that my offer still stands, but they are actively interviewing for people for that position, and if an offer goes out, then my offer is no longer valid. they told me that if i signed the offer by tonight chances are i will get the position. this is a contract with a large govt agency, and the agency is really pressuring them to hire people.

if i were to sign with company A, they do an LBI on me which takes like 4-5 days or so. they told me once the LBI went through (minor background investigation), THAT is when i should give my two weeks notice at my current position.

so what i'm thinking of maybe doing ... is signing the offer letter and mailing it back tonight, and then still interviewing with company C next monday. if things go well with company C and i get a good offer and want to go with them, then just call company A and tell them a better opportunity came and i can't really pass it up.

now my whole point of this post ... has anyone done anything like this? i know it would definitely rub company A the wrong way and burn bridges. but in the grand scheme of things, would it really hurt anything? additionally, if company C doesn't pan out, then company A would never know about company A and i would still have a new opportunity that is better than my current one.

so what would you all do in my situation?

CLIFFS:
- if you ever accepted a job offer from company X, gave 2 weeks notice to your current company, then during that 2 weeks accepted an offer from company Y, how did you handle it and how did company X react?

I've done it.

It's not a big deal. You haven't even yet worked for the first company yet, so just call them and tell them the situation early, so that they can hire somebody else.

At the end of the day, you do what is best for you and your family. In all likelihood, neither company would hesitate cutting you loose if it benefitted them somehow, so you need to do what benefits you the most.

ok just seeing if people are on the same page as me. i think i'm going to sign it and send it over, pretty much for the reason IndyColtsFan said, as well as AFurryReptile.

worst case is i get an offer at company C and go there, and call company A and they aren't happy. but other than that, i will never hear from them again so whatever lol.

See? I told ya that it was easy to negotiate an extra week of vacation!

Good luck with your company C interview!

thanks!

and realistically i could have probably gotten like $5k more if I pushed. but it's still $10k more than I'm making + a TS clearance.

You know it might not be the best idea to advertise any potential security clearances you might be receiving...
It is kind of a security threat, depending on what is going to be working on. 😛

Yes. But I was two weeks into a job delivering pizza, so they took it in stride, and I delayed my start at the new job until my 2 weeks were up at the pizza joint were up.

Company A will be pissed at you for accepting and leaving right away, so don't expect to work for them again, but you don't need to includ them in your resume either.

I assume companies D thru Z are hiring too.

Not much chance of being blacklisted in your field?

well i would have accepted, but i would never have worked there. so i would go straight from my current company to company C, so of course they wouldn't be on my resume lol.

My daughter recently applied for two jobs, got the first one, and in her first month was offered the second (which she was sure she wouldn't be offered), with much more responsibility and pay. Yeah, she took it, but was not happy about leaving the first job, where she had great coworkers. She has no regrets, but having to make that decision sucked.

welp just for an update...

i faxed over the signed offer letter to company A tonight. so i'll find out tomorrow if the position is still available. i will be shocked if not...

meanwhile, i have another company D that called me tonight and wants to do a phone interview tomorrow lol.

so now i potentially have 2 fallback companies if this one does not go through. company D and company C are 2 that i would probably prefer due to the technology use and i want to learn it, however we will see what happens!

When I go on the market and the first offer comes in, if I have talked with others, I will let the first know that I have additional options to evaluate and will let them know within 1-2 weeks; I then inform all those have have previous talked to me that I have an offer on the table and they have until such a date to let me know if they are interested.
1) It gets any that are interested to get moving
2) A larger rate may be then offered than originally talked about - I am not asking for such but it can have an impact
3) The original, knowing that there is competition, may choose to up the offer to ensure my availability

This is for a contract; if a perm slot was under consideration, it is not wise to get them in a bidding war unless you have a gold plated resume that they need.

so I'm going to be accepting the new job from company C tomorrow.

and then i have to tell company A that i am not going to be working for them after already accepting the job.

since i've never done this before, does anyone have any pointers on how to make it go smoother? it's definitely going to be awkward. i've been communicating a lot with them through email, but is this something you all think is best done on the phone?

There is no loyalty. Look out for yourself. Accept both jobs and bail and take the better one.

I've had friends start a job quit after 3-4 days and take the other offer. It sucks for them but in the end if they hire you and need to lay you off some day they won't blink either. This is the job market now . I know in my field software , people do this. People quit on 1 day notice . Bail on a job after 5 days etc. Its not like there is some universal blacklist you'll never get off of.

i already did accept 1 job and am accepting the one that i wanted more tomorrow.

that is why i'm asking what the best way to approach the first company that i accepted to let them know that i'm not going to be coming on board.

i haven't given my 2 weeks notice at my current position yet because i was waiting for a background check to go through, which actually went through today. so now they want me to give my two weeks, but the next time i contact them is to tell them i'm not coming on board with them.

just asking for suggestions on the "best" way to do this, as i've never done it.

Just be as apologetic as you can and hope you never have to apply there again. Try your best not to burn bridges but as nice as you are someone may still feel slighted and you'll just have to accept that.

Just be up front. In the end they will understand they'd do the same in your shoes.

Its not the ideal situation but just say you thought you found a better fit and appreciated the opportunity and sorry for having to back out

Alot of people would just say their current employer gave a better counter offer and you choose to stay. The first company won't be happy but that's a reality they have to deal with. After a few month, your name won't even be remembered.

No need to worry.
