*UPDATE #2* - The Search for the holy grail!!!...if that is too tough, how about stock slk3700amb fan specs?

Strange, very strange.

Ok. Some of you may have read my threads discussing my noisy rig and what I could do to quiet it some. So, I just got in my new fans (replacing the 120mm stock Antec on the SLK3700AMB with a YL-Tech fan). Now, the YL-Tech fan is this one and is rated at 64.0CFM @ 32.1dbA. Now, the stock antec specs are 107.0CFM @ 43.0dbA.

I also purchased an SLK-900(a) and a ZM-F2 to replace my very noisy Volcano 5, but I haven't done that yet.

So, I wanted to compare sound at each step. So, I swap the 120mm fans, fire 'er up and WHOOSH! Man this thing seems louder then it did before (yes, I put the side panel back on ). Plus, I put my hand behind my case and it seems like there is a LOT more air being exhausted then I have ever felt with the other fan.

So, I replace a high CFM, high noise fan with a low CFM, low noise fan and my CFM's and noise go up!?! Am I in the twilight zone?

You were right, they shipped me the wrong fan. They (SVC) sent me their generic 120mm fan which is about the same specs as the stock Antec fan. I'm sending them an e-mail in 5 minutes.

Anyone with a slk3700amb....have you/can you mod the fan mounting bracket (the plastic pieces). I'm going to get some snips and get rid of the honeycomb grill, but in all this fan stuff, I wonder if the plastic fan mount might cause any noise. Anyone mod this and did it do anything?

Yeah, that stock plastic braket rattles around like a rat turd in a violin case. Rip it off and throw it away. While you're getting rid of that grill drill yourself a new set of mounting holes so you can mount the fan right to the case, preferably using rubber grommets or the like. There's pics of my modified SLK3700 in this thread. The new fan mounting holes need to go right about midway between the existing holes. I used a 120mm fan grill as a template to locate the position of the new holes.

Have you tried using some fan gaskets? They might help on additional vibration noise. I have four 80mm and two 120mm gaskets on my rig. I did notice a bit of a drop in niose. This also may be totally subjective on the listeners part since I have no db measuring equipment to verify.

Seriously? Did I just buy a fan from a no-name company. I, too, thought it was just a typo.

@Rolf - I really don't want to have to take all of my stuff out to drill the holes, but I may in the future. I'll see how loud my stuff is after I get the proper 120mm fan installed.

My ears had gotten more sensitive at night while I was doing this, so I didn't have a good frame of reference for the sound. Replacing the HSF has reduced the upper frequency noise to virtually zero, and the overall sound has diminished by about 30% I'd say. I'll repost when I get the correct fan from SVC.

Still waiting for SVC's RMA department to e-mail me back. I'm giving them until the end of today to e-mail me back (two business day's since my original e-mail on Saturday), then I'm going to write another e-mail. I'll keep you posted.


Edit: Rolf, I noticed your last post in that silentpc thread about the SL350. Now that the 60mm whine is gone, I can definitely tell the PSU is generating a fair ammount of the noise in my case. Once I swap the 120mm fan in the back, I bet it will be the noisiest part of my rig. Speaking of noise, I do have another question (not directly related to cases & cooling), what is a quiet, fairly fast CD-Rom. The turbine spin-up on my CD-RW is VERY annoying. Finally, I'm thinking of replacing the SL350 with this. That should take care of any noise issues.

Well for one the stock fan is not 107.0CFM @ 43.0dbA, thats the specs on the aftermarket 120mm x 38mm dual ball bearing fan. The one supplied in this case is a 120mm x 25mm much thinner, and also much quieter, somewhere around ~27-29db... cfm rating around upper 40's, haven't dug deep enough on exact specs but its about that. It also looks to be a sleeve bearing fan, basicly something they just threw in to get you started. So this would explain why your newly purchased fan might be louder.

basilisk420 is right two different companys, i have a couple YL-Tech fans laying around, they aren't bad better then generic, but its not up to quality to a real YS-Tech.

Hmm....I thought I double-checked to make sure that was the stock fan.

And the fan I was sent is definitely the wrong fan. It had an SVC sticker on the fan, and the p/n doesn't match-up.

Interesting though. How loud is the SL350? Could it really be the majority of the noise left? With a CPU fan ~ 20dbA (Zalamzn ZL-F2 with the volt mod, and a Case fan at 27-29dbA, there is still plenty of noise coming from this thing. Thanks for the help. Any comments on the 300W Fortron? I'd like to avoid spending more than $30 on a new PSU. I'm not looking for super quiet. I'd be interested in seeing a list of cheap PSU's that perform well and are quiet (maybe not Seasonic quiet, but relative to jet engine PSU's quiet).

Edit: If they actually have the information posted on their website, its very well hidden. You think that the specs on the generic case fans would be on there...but then again, then they'd have to supply fans that meet those specifications. Maybe I'll volt mod both of these 120mm fans and put them both in. I need some airflow because of my O/C. Two volt-modded fans would probably be quieter than one non-volt modded right?
