I've tried beer on and off for years. I've been thinking that somehow I might be able to understand the males of our species in some way if I just could understand what was so wonderful about a 'cold one'.

I've tried budweiser (dry was the best - but can't find it here anymore). . michelob. . .pale ale. . .tecate . . shinerbock (the only one that I can palate so far that I've tried), etc.

This last week, I've tried a shiner at the end of the day. . .and I've finally finished a 6 pack of bottles after a week. Nothing is telling me to go and run and get some more. . .it actually isn't anything enjoyable. . .

So what is it you guys see in it? Is it the taste? For real? or is it simply doing what everyone else is doing? Cheap alcohol? Hmmm, what? I've tried to understand. . .

Second update:

On further advice, I got some Hornsby Green Apple Crisp Cider. It is EXPENSIVE here (a 6 pack for 10$). . . .It figures it is so pricey - cause I love it!!!!

I guess I like wheat beers better from my Sam Adam's experience and I definately love hard cider! - Question, why is hard cider not MUCH more popular?

Update:

On advice of this thread, I tried for Sam Adams - I got the cherry wheat flavor. It isn't nearly as bad as most, not bitter at all, even refreshing - still not something I would drool over. . .and pricey.

I also got some hard cider (never considered it before) I'll update whether or not it was worth it later :)

It's like coffee. Some people never grow to like the taste.

It's both the taste and the effects. I don't really care for beer, but I like the effects. That would be the only reason I drink it, not because it tastes "good". Blech.

different strokes for different folks.

Sometimes, I think nothing is better than a cold IPA: liquid crack.
Sometimes, I think nothing is better than a cool smoky porter: liquid crack.
Sometimes, I think nothing is better than a malty Amber: liquid crack.
Sometimes.....

you get the idea.

I'm 22 and have never found the taste appealing. I'd rather drink other alcoholic drinks if I drink alcohol at all, usually I just have juice or water or coke though.
I think it's just one of those things where there are people who really can't stand the taste and they aren't going to like it.
No point in forcing yourself.

It's an aquired taste. The first time I drank a Heineken, you'd think I was gargling tequila by looking at my face.

Beer is disgusting, I only drink it to get drunk so future beer consumption that night doesn't taste as bad, so yeah I don't drink it much.

BTW I'm 25 and drinking a Mikes Hard Lime right now. lol

Mmmm.. Stella. Probably my favorite beer. Unfortunately the grocery store was out of Stella so I bought some Full Sail amber.

I drink beer for the effects. If I'm just looking for something to drink around the house I enjoy a Coke or something a lot more.

I'm with you on this one. Beer is revolting. If I want alcohol I drink wine or mixed drinks. However, I will admit that my sampling of beers is quite small (because every time I try it is so awful).

Beer is pretty much all I'll drink. Wine on the other hand I can barely stand.

I've gone through Killian's, Newcastle, Bass, Harp, Guinness, Smithwick's, half & half/black & tan, Fat Tire, Stella Artois, etc. but nowadays I'm content with the usual Bud Lite/Miller Lite/Coor's Lite. They're not fantastic but not terrible either, and the nicer stuff is a treat once in a while.

Shiner is not a poor choice at all.

OP, I feel the same way. Try some wheat beers (blue moon, hefeweizens, etc). You won't love them but you will probably not mind them like I do.

If I am out I drink hard liqour (mixed drinks). I only drink beer at work where it's beer or water and I normally grab a shiner or blue moon.
