The story so far:

Sold a notebook on eBay, recieved payment through PayPal, sent item to unverified address...

UPS shows item delivered on 4-9-03, signed for by addressee.

Bidder files reverse charges, claims notebook didn't arrive, PayPal agrees & reverses charges today.

PayPal denies accountability despite proof of delivery.

~$1200 charged back to my PayPal account...

Closed my checking account associated with PayPal, PP says they'll turn me over to a bill collector after 90 days:(

:( :( Shame on me for shipping to an unverified address :( :(

Off to local Police Dept to file a report:( :(

UPDATE # 1

Took a little detective work, but the notebook sold to a car salesman in Indiana (he was using a different name on eBay?), and he resold it to someone in NY. Had to do a reverse lookup on the name on the CC used with PayPal & found out who it really was.

I just got off the phone with his boss & his mom, if he doesn't make good on the deal, I now have his address, phone #, place of work etc...

Seems his purchaser says they didn't recieve the item, so the eBay buyer decided to reverse the charges to me.

The guy's boss is going to have a little talk with him about contract law

If he doesn't make good, my local PD will have his local PD talk to him

PayPal & eBay are pretty worthless for disputes

Time to go back to the old way of editing messages...

Update #2

Seems my buyer wasn't very honest in his auction & didn't mention that the notebook was a replacement & that Compaq had already registered the serial # in my name, the 2nd buyer tried to register it & Compaq told them it appeared to have been stolen, the 2nd buyer reversed the PayPal charge, & my buyer tried to scam me.

He he he he he...

My buyer reversed his reversal, so I'm just out the time & effort of starting a new bank account.

My auction

His auction

I contacted the 2nd purchaser & told them I'd help them, if they reported the orig buyer to eBay for violating the TOS by having multiple accounts & fraudulently representing his merchandise... I also suggested they not pay him, @ least for now...

If you look closely @ his feedback, you can see he sold items to himself & gave himself feedback.

Yep, I think all I can get is the listing fee back,

I did file a Square Trade complaint, the contact info through Ebay is to a Ford dealership in Indiana who's never heard of the guy, shipped the item to Queens NY:(

I'm sure they'll try to weasel out of it, although to the best of my knowledge, one cannot be a party to an illegal act, if PayPal is aware there's fraud, they should be as guilty as the perp...

WTF is that all about? Did the buyer basically say "I didn't get my stuff!" and Paypal said "OK!" and that was it? How the hell can they ignore the proof of delivery and just agree with this jackass?

I suggest you find an attorney and file a precedent-setting lawsuit putting PP under forever. This kind of garbage has to stop. :|

I don't get the significance of an unverified address, or do you mean a "confirmed address"?

Are you saying that the person who received the package is not the person who ordered it?

pay pal has different levels of accounts, one step in the process is if you are a "verified" user, verified users have access to certain features that non verified users do not I believe accepting CC purchases is one of them.

Pliable would not be in any hot water if he was also not a verified pay pal user, but instead since he is honest they can reverse charges on him which sucks (you can only reverse charges on someone that is verified).

Pliable you should really see if you can get the billing info or how they got the money into the account to send to you, obviously if they reversed the charge it either means the CC they used to pay was stolen or the dumbass used a personal account and wants to screw you over...if it was a personal account/cc paypal should have the name on file that the card was issued under....I don't think it was a stolen card as in that case the CC company would cover the costs and you would keep your money.

Get the police involved.

Good luck

Dude, I don't need to hear this story right now. I just sold an LCD through eBay and was paid via Paypal. But he's a verified member so I'm not too worried. :D

Sucks, though. Good luck on not getting screwed (more than you have been already).

Right, but there is no such thing as a "verified address", only a "verified account". I think he meant "confirmed address".

From what he described, PayPal is in clear violation of its own policy, which requires only that the seller provide proof of shipment to a confirmed address, not a verified account member.

Prolly more to the story, usually is.

Why, why, WHY did you ship to a non-verified member/address?

That's an automatic exclusion from PayPal protection.

The buyer need not be "verified", only the seller need have a Verified Premier or Business account to qualify for protection. The buyer's address needs to be "confirmed", he need not have a "verified" account.

You are playing word games. I think it's quite clear that Pliablemoose shipped to an unconfirmed address.
