I watched some ER DVDs on my upconverting DVD player that I just got on the weekend and I have to say I could not really see a difference from just watching it normally. Maybe it's because the screen I was watching on was much bigger than I'm used to?

If I were to get a PS3, would that do a better job of upconverting? This is what I am currently using: http://www.futureshop.ca/catal...FS10086730&catid=19701

Thanks!

I would hazard a guess that a upconverter built into a HTiB is likely not any better than the upconversion circuitry built into your TV.

Also, a bigger screen should make the difference between upconverting and not upconverting more worth it.

It's tough for me to A/B test fairly on my Toshiba HD-A3 to see if I can notice a difference but when I did on my Samsung player I did not notice a major difference. Probably because the upconversion circuitry may or may not be identical(the TV was a samsung as well).

Someday here I will see if I can critically compare my A3.

So can I infer from your response that a PS3 would do a better job of upconverting? I'm going from watching on a 15.4" screen to a 46" screen, so it may just be that I need to get used to that, more than it has anything to do with the upconverting itself, but I don't know, I'm a complete nub when it come to this stuff.

It should. The PS3 is known to be a pretty good upscaler.

You definitely need to get use to the screen size difference. While 480 lines of resolution is quite good for a 15.4" screen, it really isn't great for a 46" screen. This will make the DVD's look worse just because they have been "blown up" even with an upconverter.

If you want to judge the upconverter you should set it to 1080p(or whatever your new screen is) and then switch back to 480p to see if you notice a difference. Don't try to compare a 15.4" screen to a 46" screen.

Ideally, buy BD movies from now on. Those are a much bigger increase in quality vs upconversion(obviously). This difference will be obvious on a 46" screen from your viewing distance.

Good stuff, thanks! I'll try switching between 1080p and 480p to see if I can tell the difference, once I figure out how to do that of course. :D

I guess I need to go pick up a PS3 and some BD movies...

Heh, thanks will do. I finally got HDTV from my cable company up and running last night, then spent a good 30 minutes or so just calibrating stuff.

I watched my first HD basketball after that and  it was beautiful!

I have a PS3 and a 60" Sony SXRD and I'm pretty impressed by the PS3's upscaling. I can tell the difference. I played both the DVD version of Spiderman 3 and the Blu-Ray version though. The Blue Ray version made me want to throw the DVD version away.

Lol, ok, duly noted. I was wondering whether I would just end up re-purchasing most of my DVDs, but I'll probably try to wait for the prices to come down a bit and just stick with purchasing new items.
