My dad is talking about buying dvd player that can upconvert from normal dvd res ( uh 7xx?) to 1080i or whatever it is.

Anyways, I don't follow any of this because I don't watch much TV.

I tried to explain (that even though I know zero about this) you can't make data out of nothing.

so does colt == the own? or am i missing something here

Upconverting = not even worth it. All your doing is stretching an image. I recommend getting HBO/Showtime HD with a HDTV tivo.

You can't make data out of nothing, but you can do what amounts to oversampling and cleaning of a dataset. CD players have been doing that during playback since a few years after their introduction.

You can deinterlace the video image (remove 3:2 pulldown in the case of 24p sources, do a bit of bob-and-weave on originally interlaced sources) and interpolate it up to a larger resolution. Depending on how sophisticated you want to be, you can pull some of the data from adjacent frames and use that to improve the picture as well.

The results won't look as good as true HD source material, but they can look surprisingly good, especially with progressive-source material.

ok, thanks trygve.

that is more or less what i had figured, although hadn't thought of pulling from adjacent frames. It seems to me doing that would take a fair bit of processing power?

Too bad this has to do with the Hardware DVD set-top player his father wants to buy.

Too bad you're too ignorant to realize that though I may be incorrect about which forum, I'm still correct that his post is STILL in the wrong forum.

Go here.

1. Try this.
2. And this.
3. And finally, try this if the first two don't work.

:D

I don't feel 1, 2, have anything to do with the topic.

3.. well, fair enough.

The picture IS cool, you must admit. I see many postings of this pic here in OT for years to come. ;)

I bought a samsung DVD player that upconverted to HD through the DVI connection...couldn't really tell the difference on my sony 46" widescreen, so I brought it back and saved $180 bucks...
