Upconverting AVI Files/DVD's etc on PC

I am still clueless in the world of video.

I use my PC for playing various formats of HD and SD Discs and Ripped files, as well as for saving my pictures and HD home videos. My question is in regarded to standard def material.

I currently use Media Player Classic Home Cinema for AVI files (divx/xvid) and DVD's. I have my PC hooked up to a 50 inch LG Plasma TV. I'm using a ATI 4670 connected to the TV by HDMI.

I am just wondering, is there anyway of upconverting my material similar to what a standalone DVD player does? Any software? My father has a Phillips 5990 Upconverting DVD player and it does make a difference.

Is it worthwhile to upconvert DIVX/DVD's to my TV? Is my PC already doing this?

your pc already upconverts when it plays back at 1080p or 720p output. its how 480i/p gets displayed on 1080p/720p in the first place, up convert is inevitable, its either done at pc/player or tv. something has to convert the content to fit the displays pixels which are certainly not sd resolution.
preupconverting sd stuff on a pc is wasting your time. shining a turd. there is no magic to upconverting, its simply displaying a low res image on a higher res screen as best it can. no quality is added. just as if you resize a jpg to a larger size, you are just blowing it up.
