upcoming game cpu question

my setup
q8200@ 2.33ghz
hd4870 512mb
4gigs ram
Im looking forward to playing a game that will come out early next month: Kingdoms of amalur:reckoning.
Thing is: cpu requirements are pretty heavy, in fact heavier than any game i've seen so far.
My monitor only supports 1024x768 ( quite the strain on my cpu i guess )
I can play games like B:AC fine but that's not even heavy on the proc.
Question: if i upgrade to a monitor with 1366x768 will i see a performance gain in games? ( higher the res the less strain on cpu, right? ) I can get one for 35 euro's so it's doable for me. Btw, if this works for KOA and Diablo 3 i won't be upgrading in a while.

Thanks

Going to a higher resolution doesn't reduce the strain on your CPU so much as it might make your GPU the bottleneck instead. ie, low resolution does not strain your CPU any more than a high resolution typically, but your frames per second are probably being limited by your CPU at that low resolution. Turn up the resolution and the 4870 will need to work harder - and the less your CPU matters as long as it meets the games requirements.

I would say you are basically playing on the recommended rig. With either resolution - which is likely lower than many, many people use out there, you should get performance that is just peachy.

Spoil yourself with a nicer monitor man, you deserve it 🙂

CPU strain doesn't change much with resolution.

You see low resolution tested to check the CPU because the GPU is no longer any ind of limitation... this way you can actually SEE the CPU differences.

So no, it won't reduce the strain on your CPU, but it won't necessarily increase the strain on your CPU either. It depends on the game... it may increase some, but most games have fairly flat CPU requirements, and resolution won't really change the CPU related bottlenecks.

Looked into this, looks like another quick (poor) console port for the CPU issues.

Mods for TES V: Skyrim have been re-coding portions of the game for PC and have increased FPS by as much as *50%* in areas where CPU was the bottleneck. Console ports tend to give the minimum amount of time to PC optimization. If there is some forum where you can express this, I would.
