Is there any word on C2D/C2Q prices with the release of Lynnfield? I'm going to be ordering an C2D upgrade soon (within the week preferably) but could wait a day or three if prices will be dropping. Anyone know/predict?

I haven't heard of any price drops, but I also don't expect to see any big price drops. The reason I say this is that 65nm C2 was more expensive than 45nm just a few months after 45nm was released, reason being a lot of people needed a new motherboard to support 45nm processors so they paid a premium for the 65nm so they didn't need to replace a motherboard. Currently the older Athlon X2 processors from AMD are selling for more than the Athlon II X2 processors, despite being much slower, once again the reason would be that some people would rather just buy a new Athlon X2 than replace their motherboard to purchase the Athlon II X2.

My theory is there will be no big price cuts on Core2 because of the many people who still want to upgrade their existing system. They'll loose out on price/performance of the processor, but they'll save a boat load of money by not getting a new motherboard and ram.

Actually they'll just shrink the process, name it something new and sell it for a lower price. There were rumors before the fact and everyone already hates it because "oh teh noes, rebranding!"

Oh wait, that was the GTS 250.

I have been thinking along the same lines. $100 mobo, $200 C2Q @ 4Ghz, that's just $300. Ram can be reused.

$210 i5, $150 mobo, $225 ram? $585 just too much.

I'm still on a E6300 @ 2.8Ghz, could probably get it a little higher if I tried. :p
GA-965-S3, 4850, 8G ram, Win7 64.

I would not bet on any price cuts of Core 2 products. Intel does not -want- Core 2 to be seen as competitive to its new architecture and will price the Core 2 products accordingly. Besides, we've seen this happen before. Intel's older processors have simply never dropped in price because new products come out. Q6600s still go for about $179.99.

But mobos, heatsinks with only 775 mounting clips and the like often drop in price. :)

What does their roadmap say about future "budget" or mainstream chips? I can't imagine they will go the IMC route for their entire lineup that quickly.
